ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): I'll be brief. Fritz Lang's Ministry of Fear looks fabulous on Indicator's new stacked Blu-ray - best version in existence. I've always loved John Cassavetes' Gloria and Twilight Time's new Blu-ray blows the doors off the DVD image. Absolutely recommended! David Mamet's Oleanna is a brilliantly realized play-to-film with stellar performances - now on, Region FREE, Blu-ray from Indicator. Costa-Gavras' Missing is a masterpiece and is highly deserved of it's escalation to the Blu-ray format - thanks Indicator. I loved Who Killed Teddy Bear (no question mark) now on, Region FREE, Blu-ray from Network in the UK. Wow - significant upgrade, of an intriguing, and rarely seen, film. To see Zhang Yimou's sumptuous Red Sorghum make it to Blu-ray is very encouraging and the new Diskino Blu-ray has a 50-minute extra with Tony Rayns! The Wachowski's delicious neo-noir Bound only gets better over the years and Olive's Signature Blu-ray offers two cuts and a very rich, (saturated?) image with some valuable extras. I want to watch it again - right now! Giallo lovers will be very please with 88 Films new Blu-ray of Umberto Lenzi's Eyeball. This mystery-thriller looks fabulous on Blu-ray. Ronald Neame's The Odessa File with Jon Voight has been released on Blu-ray by Indicator and they have easily eclipsed the previous BD. The films is adapted from Frederick Forsyth's bestseller and involves a former Nazi. Country has Jessica Lange and Sam Shepard - a strong drama that Kino has advanced to Blu-ray. I'm a sucker for films like The Horror of Party Beach - a quasi Drive-In, exploitation popcorner that Severin have brought to us on Blu-ray. What's not to love? Dear Dead Delilah is exactly how it sounds - but has Agnes Moorehead plus Will Geer to push her wheelchair around as the murders start. Now on Blu-ray from Vinegar Syndrome - bless them! 88 Films bring us the horror anthology "Deadtime Stories" - a fun 80's flic that has surfaced on UK Blu-ray. Federico Fellini’s second solo directorial effort I Vitelloni should be a pass on Cult Films new Blu-ray. The image has significant issues. On DVD Eric reviewed the highly lauded film Cry the Beloved Country with Sidney Poitier, the also highly regarded João Pedro Rodrigues' film O Fantasma and the Ozploitation laugher Pacific Banana. I covered The Bletchley Circle - San Francisco Part One - very good Brit detective fodder - worth the indulgence.

'I've always loved the way movie stars in the Forties looked when they were off set. Shot poolside or at their home, they always wore a matte red lipstick with practically no foundation - it was how they wore makeup in real life..' - Francois Nars

Have an family-oriented week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Dear Dead Delilah BD - Back in 1943, Luddy viciously murdered her mother with an axe. 30 years later and freshly released from the state mental hospital, deemed 'cured' of her violent impulses, Luddy's luck seems to be turning around, thanks to a chance encounter with the family of Delilah (Agnes Moorehead), the miserly matriarch of a large plantation estate. She quickly finds herself hired as Delilah's housekeeper, but no sooner than her arrival at the cavernous and secluded mansion, grisly murders begin to take place. And worse, each time a new corpse is discovered, Luddy finds she is unable to recall her whereabouts at the time of the bloodshed. Blu-ray Release Date: August 28th, 2018

Deadtime Stories BD - Your favorite nightmares come to life in a salute to the age-old bedtime story ritual. Travel on a mysterious journey to a medieval world populated by blood-crazed witches, evil experiments and captive maidens. Then from the catacombs and dark caverns of medieval Europe, you’ll plunge into modern suburbia and the adventures of a female jogger stalked by a savage werewolf. Finally, sensuality will become macabre, black comedy as you follow the trail of three bank robbers who share their country house hideaway with a sweet murderess. Blu-ray Release Date: August 27th, 2018

Oleanna BD - Based on his own controversial and incendiary stage play about a young college student who accuses her much older professor of sexual harassment, David Mamet’s riveting drama features two grandstand performances from leads William H Macy and Debra Eisenstadt. Now more relevant and provocative than ever, Oleanna is both a reaction against the plague of political correctness, and a powerful, yet teasingly ambiguous, plea for tolerance between the sexes. Blu-ray Release Date: September 3rd, 2018

Country BD - Released in the mid-1980s, this farm drama stars Jessica Lange and Sam Shepard as Jewell and Gil Ivy, who run a small farm in Iowa that has been in Jewell's family for several generations; her father Otis (Wilford Brimley) lives with them, along with their three children. While the work is hard and the earnings are slim, the Ivys have been able to get by, like most of their neighbors, until a one-two punch threatens to devastate the Iowa farming community. First, a tornado devastates the area, then the Farmers Home Administration calls in the loans on most of the farmers in the area, which they are in no position to repay. With thirty days to "voluntarily liquidate" their property, the Ivys, like most of their friends and neighbors, are desperate to find a way to hold on to their property, and when the stress causes Gil to buckle, Jewell must step in to keep the clan going. Blu-ray Release Date: August 28th, 2018

The Horror of Party Beach BD - When nuclear waste dumped into the ocean mutates a shipwreck full of corpses, it will unleash an onslaught of bikini teens, surprising gore, dubious science, an intrepid maid, The Del-Aires, and arguably the greatest, worst monsters in horror movie history. Severin is proud to present this cult favorite from "Connecticut's own Ed Wood" (Stamford Advocate), now featuring a new 2k scan from the original negative and loaded with all-new Special Features like nothing that ever stalked this earth! Blu-ray Release Date: August 28th, 2018

Gloria (Cassavetes) BD - Indie godfather John Cassavetes transforms Gena Rowlands into his own little Pam Grier in this oddly sweet-and-sour, PG-rated mob melodrama with, naturally, a cute orphan kid. The ingredients ensure that the overall mixture is far from colloidal, but Gloria's most salient feature is Rowlands' extraordinarily well-rounded embodiment of the titular role: an extremely classy ex-mob dame with a hair-trigger temper and a tongue of fire. Blu-ray Release Date: August, 2018

The Odessa File BD - The year is 1963. The place: Hamburg, Germany. An elderly Jewish man commits suicide, leaving a diary which falls into the hands of a freelance newspaperman, Peter Miller (Jon Voight). The diary documents the unspeakable crimes of cruelty, torture and mass murder perpetrated by SS Captain Eduard Roschmann (Maximilian Schell), commandant of the notorious wartime deathcamp at Riga, Latvia. Miller launches a personal manhunt to track down Roschmann, an investigation that leads him into the very heart of Odessa, a powerful secret organization formed by the SS to protect and re-establish its fugitive members throughout the world. When Miller finds Roschmann, he learns that the former Nazi is now the leader of a weaponry complex of international, strategic consequence. Indicator Blu-ray Release Date: September 3rd, 2018

Missing BD - Missing is political filmmaker extraordinaire Costa-Gavras's compelling, controversial dramatization of the search for American filmmaker and journalist Charles Horman, who mysteriously disappeared during the 1973 coup in Chile. Jack Lemmon and Sissy Spacek give magnetic, emotionally commanding performances as Charles's father and wife, who are led by U.S. embassy and consulate officials through a series of bureaucratic dead-ends before eventually uncovering the terrifying facts about Charles’s fate and disillusioning truths about their government. Written and directed with clarity and conscience, the Academy Award–winning Missing is a testament to Costa-Gavras's daring. Blu-ray Release Date: August 27th, 2018

Bound BD - Destined for cult status, this provocative thriller offers a grab bag of genres (gangster movie, comedy, sexy romance, crime caper) and tops it all off with steamy passion between lesbian ex-con Corky (Gina Gershon) and a not-so-ditzy gun moll named Violet (Jennifer Tilly), who meets Corky and immediately tires of her mobster boyfriend (Joe Pantoliano). Desperate to break away from the Mob's influence and live happily ever after, the daring dames hatch a plot to steal $2 million of Mafia money. Their scheme runs into a series of escalating complications, until their very survival depends on split-second timing and criminal ingenuity. Simultaneously violent, funny, and suspenseful, Bound is sure to test your tolerance for bloodshed, but the film is crafted with such undeniable skill that several critics (including Roger Ebert) placed it on their top-ten lists for 1996... Olive Signature Blu-ray Release Date: August 28th, 2018

Red Sorghum BD - Celebrated Mainland filmmaker Zhang Yimou brings his inimitable touch to Red Sorghum, a sumptuous drama set during 1930s China, just prior to the Japanese occupation. Jiu'er (Gong Li) is a young bride arranged to marry the leprous owner of a sorghum winery. But the leper dies, and Jiu'er takes over the winery, along with her lover (Jiang Wen), a burly rogue with a natural, rough charisma. Their rural lives are filled with struggle and even joy, but the invasion of the Japanese brings tragedy and blood to their doorsteps. Told in glorious shades of red, Red Sorghum is quintessential Zhang Yimou, and uses setting, cinematography, and stunning imagery to create characters and mood that are both iconic and recognizable. Blu-ray Release Date: July, 2018

Who Killed Teddy Bear BD - Spinning platters in a seedy discotheque, Juliet Prowse starts getting obscene phone calls then finds a decapitated teddy bear in her apartment. Police detective Jan Murray takes the case, which holds an obsessive interest for him. Four years earlier his wife had been raped and murdered; now the world of perversion and fetishism has become his life, both professionally and privately (despite a young daughter, who listens to him listening to his lurid tapes from her bedroom). Prowse becomes so shaken by the stalking that she can't quite trust him, or for that matter her tough-as-nails boss Elaine Stritch, who, invited home to serve as protection, makes a pass at her. Shown the door, Stritch, in a slip and fur coat, wanders the dark streets and back alleys, where... Blu-ray Release Date: September 17th, 2018

Ministry of Fear BD - Suffused with dread and paranoia, this Fritz Lang adaptation of a novel by Graham Greene is a plunge into the eerie shadows of a world turned upside down by war. En route to London after being released from a mental institution, Stephen Neale (Ray Milland) stops at a seemingly innocent village fair, after which he finds himself caught in the web of a sinister underworld with possible Nazi connections. Lang was among the most illustrious of the European émigré filmmakers working in Hollywood during World War II, and Ministry of Fear is one of his finest American productions, an unpredictable thriller with style to spare. Blu-ray Release Date: August 27th, 2018

I Vitelloni BD - Five young men linger in post-adolescent limbo dreaming of adventure and escape from their small seacoast town. They while away their time spending the lira doled out by their indulgent families on drink, women, and nights at the local pool hall. Federico Fellini’s second solo directorial effort (originally released in the U.S. as The Young and the Passionate) is a semi-autobiographical masterpiece of sharply drawn character sketches: Skirt chaser Fausto, forced to marry a girl he has impregnated; Alberto, the perpetual child; Leopoldo, a writer, thirsting for fame; and Moraldo, the only member of the group troubled by a moral conscience. Blu-ray Release Date: August 27th, 2018

Eyeball BD - Released in 1975, EYEBALL might just be the late, great Umberto Lenzi's greatest giallo! Gruesome and gruelling, this torrid tale of a black gloved killer with a fetish for plucking out the peepers of his unlucky victims is a personal favourite of PULP FICTION genius Quentin Tarantino and it is easy to see why. Boasting plenty of bloodshed and some beautiful Catalonian locations, EYEBALL is a murder-mystery that stands up to the best of Mario Bava and Dario Argento and, with its messy arterial mayhem, even anticipates the later excess of such American slasher staples as FRIDAY THE 13TH! Dare you open your eyes to EYEBALL? Blu-ray Release Date: August 27th, 2018

The Bletchley Circle - San Francisco Part One - Set during the thrilling social change of the mid-1950s, THE BLETCHLEY CIRCLE: SAN FRANCISCO captures the lives of four remarkable women as they navigate various challenges, rekindle their capacities, and seek justice. Jean (Julie Graham) and Millie (Rachael Stirling) are brilliant codebreakers who, following their time serving at Bletchley Park during WWII, have rebuilt their lives in London. Drawn to the Pacific Coast by a string of murders that share grisly similarities to that of an old codebreaking friend, the two women find Iris (Crystal Balint) and Hailey (Chanelle Peloso), their wartime US counterparts. DVD Release Date: August 27th, 2018

O Fantasma - O FANTASMA, the debut film of João Pedro Rodrigues, the auteur of THE ORNITHOLOGIST, TO DIE LIKE A MAN, and TWO DRIFTERS was hailed as one of the top 10 films of the year. O FANTASMA was praised as an 'audacious and compelling, dark and erotic cautionary tale about a marginalized young man (Ricardo Meneses), a trash collector living and working in the seedy north of Lisbon, exploring his sexuality. Rodrigues and Meneses, in a rigorous, risky portrayal, chart the young man's odyssey, with its potential for self-discovery as well as self-obliteration, with psychological insight and visual power. O FANTASMA is boldly, confidently orchestrated, aesthetically and sexually, and its impact is deeply and rightly disturbing.' DVD Release Date: July 24, 2018

Cry the Beloved Country - A black minister Stephen Kumalo (Canada Lee) lives a quiet life as a parish priest in the back-country of South Africa. When his son Absolom leaves the small valley where he grew up for the bright lights of the city he goes missing. After several months of silence, the minister goes to search for him and comes face to face with the squalor and poverty of the Johannesburg slums. Reverend Msimangu (Sidney Poitier) is a young clergyman who joins him in his search, but neither are prepared for what they discover. DVD Release Date: June 2018

Pacific Banana - Martin (Graeme Blundell) has got a little problem that keeps getting bigger all the time...and the girls will go to any lengths to help him stand up for himself. Take one clapped-out aircraft, two randy airline pilots (Graeme Blundell and Robin Stewart), two sexy, willing air hostesses (Playboy playmate Deborah Gray and Alyson Best), one bosomy tour director (Luan Peters), a host of madcap passengers, plus an idyllic French Polynesian setting and you have all the ingredients for a Bawdy, rollicking comedy in the "Alvin Purple" tradition. DVD Release Date: June 6th, 2018
