directed by Del Tenney
USA 1964
In 1964, 20th Century Fox released an
independent shocker - shot in two weeks for $50,000
outside Stamford, Connecticut by local producer/director
Del Tenney - advertised as "The First Horror-Monster
Musical." More than 50 years later, this "Absolute
classic of exploitation cinema" (Legends Magazine),
returns like you've never seen or heard it before. When nuclear waste dumped into the ocean mutates a shipwreck full of corpses, it will unleash an onslaught of bikini teens, surprising gore, dubious science, an intrepid maid, The Del-Aires, and arguably the greatest, worst monsters in horror movie history. Severin is proud to present this cult favorite from "Connecticut's own Ed Wood" (Stamford Advocate), now featuring a new 2k scan from the original negative and loaded with all-new Special Features like nothing that ever stalked this earth! |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc. ADDITION: Severin Blu-ray - August 2018: Severin bring us the Rock & Roll horror film, "The Horror of Party Beach" on a single-layer Blu-ray. The film has a supportive bitrate throughout. The image is much better here than on the previous DVD. Detail levels are good, with a fair amount of grain. There are the occasional specks of damage, but this is not overwhelming. Some scenes seem a tad brighter than the DVD but this is ok, due to the increased level of detail. Contrast is also much more impressive here, with a nice range of grays and blacks. Since this is a new 2k scan from the original negative, the image looks much better. The framing is slightly different, with the previous DVD release having a little more information on all sides, but I actually prefer this Blu-ray framing.Severin have transferred the audio from the original Mono soundtrack and remastered it in linear PCM. It is a 16-bit track but this is fine for a film of its age. Dialogue is clear and the music from the Del-Aires sounds fantastic. I even decided to check out their music on Spotify after hearing them here. There are optional English SDH subtitles on this Region-free Blu-ray. Severin provide some neat extras here although we don't get the commentary of the 2006 DVD. It starts with "Return to Party Beach". This 16-minute documentary provides a look back on Party Beach. "It's the Living End: An Encounter with the Del-Aires" is a 4-minute interview with band members Bobby Osborne and Ronnie Linares. "Shock & Roll" features filmmaker Tim Sullivan speaking for 7-minutes on the Rock & Roll Horror film. Also included here is a 9-minute archival interview with director Del Tenney. The film's trailer is also included, and it is as fun as the film itself. Shot in two weeks for $50,000 in small-town, Connecticut, this is a fun little time-capsule of a film. Severin have done a nice job transferring the film here. Recommended to fans of cheesy monster movies and fans of 50s and 60s Rock & Roll. - Colin Zavitz |
