(aka "The Devil's Eye" or "The Eye" or "The Secret Killer" or "Wide-Eyed in the Dark" or "Secret Killer" or "Eyeball")

directed by Umberto Lenzi

Italy 1975

Released in 1975, EYEBALL might just be the late, great Umberto Lenzi's greatest giallo! Gruesome and gruelling, this torrid tale of a black gloved killer with a fetish for plucking out the peepers of his unlucky victims is a personal favourite of PULP FICTION genius Quentin Tarantino and it is easy to see why. Boasting plenty of bloodshed and some beautiful Catalonian locations, EYEBALL is a murder-mystery that stands up to the best of Mario Bava and Dario Argento and, with its messy arterial mayhem, even anticipates the later excess of such American slasher staples as FRIDAY THE 13TH! Dare you open your eyes to EYEBALL? This essential Italian terror totem is finally available in horrifying HD thanks to the body-count Kings at 88 Films!

ADDITION: 88 Films - Region FREE - Blu-ray (August 2018): 88 Films' 1080P transfer of Umberto Lenzi's Eyeball looks fantastic. The 2.35:1 image is a huge step up over the previous SD DVD release, and not just for having more information in the frame than the DVD's 2.27:1 image. The film is housed on a dual-layered Blu-ray disc with a high bitrate. The level of detail is astonishing for a film of this age. Just compare the Blu-ray/dvd screen captures of John Richardson's face to see what I mean. In that screenshot you will also notice that the fleshtones are much warmer and therefore lifelike, and most colors really pop. Contrast levels are also very good, blacks are rich and deep. There is a reasonable amount of grain too, giving the film a nice texture. 88 Films continue to amaze me with these transfers, and this one is no slouch. There is also a second disc here, a DVD of the film.

88Films give the audio option of either English or Italian 2.0 stereo sound in DTS-HD Master (24-bit). This track sounds great and is another welcome improvement over the previous DVD's tracks.
Bruno Nicolai (All the Colours of the Dark, The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave, Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key, Face to Face, The Perverse Countess, Torso, Ten Little Indians, Pasolini's Hawks and the Sparrows) provides the score here and it is a memorable one. The sound isn't too muddy or flat when compared to other releases of films of this era. There are optional English subtitles. Though the film is listed as Region 'B' Blu-ray on the back cover, we can confirm that it is Region FREE!

Quite the selection of extras to be found here. "All Eyes on Lenzi: The Life and Times of the Italian Exploitation Titan" is a wonderful (feature-length!) documentary that is included on the Blu-ray. The doc features many critics and academics, including footage of Lenzi himself. Lenzi passed away last year but his outrageous and provocative body work is nicely encapsulated here. We also get yet another commentary from the nice folks at "The Hysteria Continues", and it is surely worth a listen. "Eyeballs on Martine Brochard" is a brand new 16-minute interview with actress Martine Brochard. "Locations" is a 2-minute piece on the shooting locations of the film, with current footage of said places. There are also Eyeball trailers and a reversible sleeve with alternate artwork. For the 1st print run of discs, there are also 4 original “Gatti rossi in un labirinto di vetro” lobby card reproductions, which is very cool. The first printing also has a limited edition booklet featuring "All About Umberto", an extensive and intricate look back at the work of an Italian genre-bending legend... by Calum Waddell and "Cats and Eyeballs", an interview with Umberto Lenzi by Eugenio Ercolani.

Eyeball is another delicious Giallo. For fans of director Lenzi, this package is quite a treat. Full to the brim with neat extras and an absolutely beautiful transfer, this disc comes highly recommended to fans of this stylistic genre. Another great 88 films
Blu-ray!
