Directed by Jeffrey Delman
USA 1986
Your favorite nightmares come to life in a salute to the age-old bedtime story ritual. Travel on a mysterious journey to a medieval world populated by blood-crazed witches, evil experiments and captive maidens. Then from the catacombs and dark caverns of medieval Europe, you’ll plunge into modern suburbia and the adventures of a female jogger stalked by a savage werewolf. Finally, sensuality will become macabre, black comedy as you follow the trail of three bank robbers who share their country house hideaway with a sweet murderess. Excerpt from IAmazon located HERE *** In the creepy compendium style of CREEPSHOW (1982) comes DEADTIME STORIES (1986) a collection of stories with teeth and torment that are sure to send chills down the spines of viewers even today! A sleazy and shocking pack of splatter fairy tales - this contemporary spin on the likes of "Little Red Riding Hood" has gore aplenty, a sick sense of humour and enough splattered limbs to make for essential late night viewing. Directed by genre veteran Jeffrey Delman and packed full of plastic fantastic charms, 88 Films is enthusiastic about keeping you up at night with this perfectly restored comedy horror. |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.ADDITION: (August 2018) 88 Films - Region 'B' - Blu-ray: 88 Films bring us the horror anthology "Deadtime Stories" as part of their 88 Vault sub-label. The film is housed on a single-layered Blu-ray but has a high bitrate for the 1-hour 22-minute film. The image looks pretty solid for a film from the 80's with its, often, less-resilient films stock, but certain scenes look a little soft. This is noted as being a Hi-def transfer from the original negative. Other than those moments, the grain levels are decent, and the colors seem correct, with bloody reds looking especially nice. The contrast levels could be better, with some black or dark shadows looking a little uniform, lacking shading. This is not too much of an issue though, as it really just adds to the dark and spooky nature of the film. Not a bad transfer. The film is presented in a 24-bit DTS-HD 2.0 stereo track. The levels are nice, with audible dialogue and score by Larry Juris (Voodoo Dawn) with the 'theme' Bedtime Tales, and Looney Tune, Baby, No Maybe, plus The Wolf's Lament. There are optional English subtitles on this Region 'B' Blu-ray. In the extras 88 Films include an audio commentary with director/co-writer/co-producer Jeffrey Delman. This is an informative track, with Delman claiming right off the bat that he doesn't like to hear commentators just relay what you are seeing on the screen. Delman has a great memory and provides tons of details on the production of the film. There are some funny moments, including the fact that some of the red riding hood sequences were shot in an 'adult' studio in Queens, NY. Next up is "I Like the Grotesque" which is a 15-minute interview with the director. Next is "The Black Forest" which is a 30-min alternate cut of the first story, the footage here isn't in the best shape but this is a really cool feature to have for fans. Next up is 2.5-minutes of deleted scenes, followed by trailers, and a still gallery (with some cool storyboards from the film). There is a reversible sleeve with alternate artwork. There is also a limited edition booklet with "Assemlance of Outrage", a piece written by Calum Waddell. Deadtime Stories is a fun throwback to the horror-anthology craze of the 80's. Though some moments haven't aged well, this is certainly an impressive film to fans of horror shorts/anthologies. 88 Films have done a nice job with the extras, though it would appear some of them appeared on an earlier Scream Factory Blu-ray release. Recommended to horror fans! |
