Directed by Peter George
USA 1987
Troma Entertainment, the company behind such classics as THE TOXIC AVENGER, really outdid themselves with the 1987 cult classic SURF NAZIS MUST DIE. Set in a futuristic California hell-hole, in which an apocalyptic natural disaster has left the iconic Baywatch-perfect beaches of Malibu and Venice as gang-lands, various parties battle one another in an attempt to control the sand and sea of this former West Coast paradise. This is sex, surf and splatter in a sordid sci-fi setting and thirty years after it first gained the attention of video shop loyalists and marginal movie followers, SURF NAZIS MUST DIE is back to brutalize a new generation of fright-fans! |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.ADDITION: (August 2018) 88 Films - Region FREE - Blu-ray: 88 Films bring us the wonderfully-titled "Surf Nazis Must Die" to single-layered Blu-ray . It has a supportive bitrate for the 1-hour 22-minute film. It is advertised as a "NEW (2018) 2K Scan and Restoration from Positive Elements". It is in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio and looks a shade inconsistent at times but often quite pleasing with depth through most of the 1080P presentation. You can see texture that resembles noise - but isn't. I image the original film looked very similar. Surf Nazis Must Die is presented in a 16-bit DTS-HD 2.0 stereo track. It is consistent with audible dialogue and electric-heavy score by Jon McCallum (Miami Connection) augmented by Alcoholic's Anthem performed by The Tazers and Nobody Goes Home by Andrew Spindler. It sounds good. There are optional English subtitles (see sample) on this Region FREE Blu-ray. Extras include Smeg's Lament: a new, 12-minute, Interview with Tom Shell talking about the film with enthusiasm. There are 7-minutes of deleted scenes with audio commentary and brief interviews with director Peter George and producer Robert Tinnell. Also included is the unnecessary and goofy 'Scenes From the Tromaville Café'. Lastly, we get an original trailer. Who doesn't love some Lloyd Kaufman cheese? Surf Nazis Must Die is superb low-life cinema. It has unapologetic exploitation elements and a great Pam-Grier-Dirty-Harry-The-Warriors-Clockwork-Orange vengeance vibe. A solid idea, and title, that has encouraged repetition. 88 Films have brought this super-fun comedy actioner to Blu-ray and it has plenty of entertainment value. Recommended to those who can let their hair down! |
