Directed by Powell Robinson + Patrick Robert Young
USA 2021

When a phone call from out of the blue brings Leo (Joey Millin) back into contact with his sister, Virginia (Madison West), long estranged from her family due to years of drug abuse, he arrives to find her alone in a bare apartment in the midst of an apparent overdose. After the convulsions and nausea subside, Virginia insists to Leo that she has been clean for 8 months due to the help of a mysterious group. She confides to her cynical brother that her edginess and paranoia actually stem from a sinister ritual conducted by the group that took her in at her lowest and eventually revealed themselves to be a cult. This curse bound her emotions and physical sensations to a man she has never met before.

With his marriage on the rocks, Leo has his own demons to face. Nonetheless, he is reluctantly persuaded by Virginia to embark on a cross-country road trip to track down this shadowy stranger under the caveat that if he's nowhere to be found and it's all in her head, she'll go to rehab. However, as their date with destiny draws nearer, Leo begins to suspect his sister’s tall tale might have some substance.

Threshold, the second feature from co-directors Powell Robinson and Patrick R Young, following their debut Bastard (2015), was improvised and shot on two iPhones over the course of a 12-day road trip with a crew of just three. The result is an inventive and compelling psychological thriller with hints of the supernatural that recalls such indie cult classics as Ben Wheatley’s Kill List (2011) and Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s Resolution (2013).

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Arrow Blu-ray (July 2021): Arrow have transferred co-directors Powell Robinson + Patrick Robert Young's Threshold to Blu-ray. The film is notable for advertising that it was shot using an iPhone (like Sean Baker's Tangerine.) It shows some moderate limitations (flaring, motion blurring etc.) but generally look quite impressive considering. Kudos to technology. It is shot in the, increasingly popular, 'divine ratio' of 2.0:1. I recall the discussion, a long while ago, that Vittorio Storaro (The Last Emperor) believes that all his films shot in 35mm anamorphic (Technovision) should be presented at 2.00:1 because he thinks that all (his) films should replicate the aspect ratio of the Leonardo Da Vinci painting "The Last Supper". This film is a function of HD video.  So, anyway, Threshold looks, predictably, clean and the iPhone shooting allows inventive, pragmatic angles and close-ups for Indie-level production, and everything comes through fine; the colors, detail, only some, expected, waxiness in-motion and a touch of what looks like moiring. This film looks pleasing via the 1080P on a dual-layered disc with a high bitrate. Some of the darker scenes belie the natural lighting but it seems to work fine. I had no problem with the Blu-ray appearance. NOTE: I couldn't find the title in the film proper (don't think I missed it) but the above is via a trailer.

On their Blu-ray, Arrow use a DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround track (24-bit) in the original English language. It has a few deft separations near the conclusion but shows the limitations of the production with a score credited to Nick Chuba (who has done shorts and documentary work), sounding effective with consistent dialogue. Once again, it worked for me. Arrow offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Arrow Blu-ray offers a new commentaries and extras out the wazoo. The first commentary has directors Powell Robinson and Patrick R. Young, producer Lauren Bates and lead actors Joey Millin and Madison West. They have plenty of fun reminiscing on the hurdles they overcame. The second audio commentary has directors Robinson and Young, with editor William Ford-Conway focusing a bit more on production information; goals achieved, ad-hoc choices, (ADR) automated dialogue replacement, stabalizing etc. and also they are having fun 'post' the project. Budding filmmakers may get the most benefit. Crossing the Threshold is a feature-length (1 1/2 hours - longer than the film) documentary on the making of Threshold and it covers a lot of of specific ground. Elevating iPhone Footage, Color Correction Breakdown show 3-minutes of that aspect of the process. Something from Nothing, Indie Genre Director Roundtable moderated by Scott Weinberg with directors Robinson and Young, Brandon Espy (We Follow You), James Byrkit (Coherence), Zach Donohue (The Den) and Elle Callahan (Witch Hunt) runs over an hour. I liked "The Power of Indie Horror - Acting for Unconventional Film" roundtable discussion moderated by Zena Dixon with the actors Madison West and Joey Millin, Kelsey Griswold (Followed), Gabrielle Walsh (Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones) and Ryan Shoos (The Gallows) via video conference. The Sounds of Threshold details the evolution of the original soundtrack for 25-minutes. Arrow include text screens of the Threshold original outline script. There is a trailer, original teaser and an image gallery. The package has a reversible sleeve (see below) featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by 'Coffee and Cigarettes' and for the first pressing you get an illustrated collector's booklet featuring new writing on the film by Anton Bitel.

I really appreciate that Arrow are releasing modern Indie films, like this, on Blu-ray (The Stylist, A Ghost Waits and The Bloodhound) that have been under-seen because of the COVID lockdown cancellation of many festivals. This again is stacked (commentaries, extensive 'making of', roundtable discussion  etc.) with extensive details on production. It's an encouragement to self-made filmmakers everywhere. I love the support they are providing to more pragmatic efforts  and I enjoyed this film as a 'road picture', sibling bonding and the surprise conclusion. It was short enough to warrant a sequel or series continuing the occult-focused adventure. There is value here for those pining for festival content and curious cinephiles. Certainly recommended!
