Directed by Adam Stovall
USA 2020

An ingeniously unique and unpredictable combo of horror, humor and heart, A Ghost Waits is a DIY labor of love years in the making from first-time writer/director Adam Stovall and producer/star MacLeod Andrews.

Tasked with renovating a neglected rental home, handyman Jack (MacLeod Andrews, They Look Like People, Doctor Sleep) quickly finds out why the tenants keep leaving in droves - this house is haunted. The ghost in question is Muriel (Natalie Walker), herself employed from beyond the veil to keep the home vacant. Against the odds, Jack and Muriel find they have a lot in common... pulse notwithstanding. Having found a kindred spirit in an otherwise lonely existence, they must fight for their newfound affection as pressure mounts for them each to fulfil their 'cross-purposes'.

From its opening spectral assault to its achingly poignant conclusion - as well as a witty depiction of afterlife bureaucracy in the vein of Beetlejuice and A Matter of Life and Death - A Ghost Waits has shocked and surprised audiences around the world, and now makes its home video debut stacked with insightful bonus features that take you inside the process of creating this phantasmagorical monochrome marvel.

***

Jack's job is to fix up the house. Spectral agent Muriel's eternal task is to haunt it. They should be enemies, but they become fascinated by one another and eventually smitten, leading them to question everything about their work, lives, and decisions. But as pressure mounts for them to fulfil their duties, something's got to give for them to have the time together they both so desperately want.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Arrow Blu-ray (April 2021): Arrow have transferred Adam Stovall's A Ghost Waits to Blu-ray. It is on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate and look stellar in 1080P. The film is in black and white, in 1.78:1 with an HD camera (Blackmagic Pocket Cinema). I loved the visuals by cinematographer Michael C. Potter. I love that Arrow are releasing these smaller-scale modern film to Blu-ray like The Bloodhound. I would have never seen it otherwise. I appreciated the cloudy night appearance and the tight close-ups showing strong detail. The image quality is basically flawless looking like a solid representation of its theatrical showings.

On their Blu-ray, Arrow use a linear PCM 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the original English language. It sounds modest but the film doesn't require an extensive soundstage. There is a score credited to Mitch Bain and Margaret Darling, sounding sparse but supportive of the film's moods when required. It is clear and consistent. Arrow offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

There aren't one, nor two but three audio commentaries on Arrow's Blu-ray of A Ghost Waits - with the first by writer/director Adam Stovall (not advertised but with his friend Cori Luffler <sp?>) where they talk about details of the production. The second has Adam and star MacLeod Andrews covering much of his role in the film and a third, fun one with the cast and crew including Stovall, cinematographer Mike. Potter, MacLeod Andrews (again), Sydney Vollmer (Rosie in A Ghost Waits), Nicholas Thurkettle (credited as Adam's voice) and eventually executive producer M.F. Thomas. There are plenty of supplements beyond the commentaries; Humanity and the Afterlife in 'A Ghost Waits'; is a new 1/4 hour video essay by Isabel Custodio exploring the film's themes and cinematic forebears. There are eight interviews with cast and crew moderated by critic and programmer 'tt stern-enzi'. We also get about 25-minutes worth of an interview and post-film Q&A with Adam Stovall moderated by Alan Jones at Frightfest Glasgow 2020. There are a dozen minutes of outtakes, a theatrical trailer, image gallery and some Easter Eggs that we won't comment on (couldn't find them) and the package has a reversible sleeve featuring newly commissioned artwork by Sister Hyde and original artwork by Julie Hill and for the first pressing only there is an illustrated collectors' booklet featuring new writing by Craig Ian Mann.

I enjoyed A Ghost Waits. It's a mixed genre of horror, humor and romance ensuring contemplative discussion of life's decisions, happiness and love. It explores nihilistic depression and the joy of connection - despite obvious obstacles. It's wonderfully realized by Stovall. It's an easy comparison to Beetlejuice but with less broad, over-the-top, humor. It is far more cerebral and touching. MacLeod Andrews and Natalie Walker are excellent. I was keen through the entire viewing. I look forward to more from him and his cast members showing what is capable on a lower, affordable, budget. The super-stacked Arrow Blu-ray is at their usual top-shelf standards of a/v and supplements and I welcome more of these underexposed films being released by them in 1080P. Absolutely recommended!
