Directed by Patrick Picard
USA 2020

First-time feature director Patrick Picard brings a fresh take to one of the best-known stories from the master of mystery and the macabre, Edgar Allan Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher, in his new slow-burner horror-thriller The Bloodhound, a hauntingly atmospheric tale described by The Hollywood News as an impressively stylish and intellectual debut .

Francis (Liam Aiken, A Series of Unfortunate Events), a dispossessed young man, is summoned to the secluded home of his wealthy childhood friend, JP Luret (Joe Adler, The Maze Runner), who is suffering from a mysterious affliction. Upon his arrival, Francis realizes that JP and his ethereal twin sister Vivian (Annalise Basso, Ouija: Origin of Evil) are the sole surviving members of the privileged Luret family, whose legacy has been one of depression and self-destruction, and the only occupants of their family estate. As the old friends attempt to reconnect, a number of inexplicable incidents begin to occur within the house, and Francis finds himself drawn into a world of malaise and despair, where an act of betrayal might provide his only way out
From Leal Naim and Thomas R. Burke, producers of The Endless and Synchronic, and featuring some remarkable performances from its trio of lead actors, The Bloodhound leads you on a journey exploring themes that are as relevant to today as ever before, such as the yearning for emotional connection, the perils of social isolation and the fragility of mental health.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Arrow Blu-ray (March 2020): Arrow have transferred Patrick Picard's The Bloodhound to Blu-ray. It is on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate in the 1.66:1 aspect ratio. It looks fabulous - the film has plenty of low lit sequences - notably in the beginning of the film - but detail and layered contrast are carried expertly by the 1080P rendering. Kudos to cinematographer Jake Magee for a precise and controlled use of space. There is depth and I can't imagine this looking any better than the HD presentation provided by this Blu-ray.

On their Blu-ray, Arrow offer the option of a DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround or a linear PCM stereo track (both at 24-bit) in the original English language. There are subtle separations, no credited score or much music at all (Mozart opera sung and played on the piano) but the soundstage is clean with consistent dialogue. The frequent long pauses do imbue a cold Gothic feel to the film experience. Arrow offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Arrow Blu-ray offers a new commentary by director Patrick Picard and editor David Scorca where they causally discuss the production, laughing anecdotes of meeting the participants, difficulties of specific shots, how the film was named etc. They can discuss things only the filmmakers would be aware of and from that standpoint it is interesting. Arrow include four experimental short films by director Patrick Picard; Bad Dream, The Muffled Hammerfall in Action, The Mosaic Code and Wiggleworm. They all run about one minute long and, to be honest, I didn't get much out of them. On the Trail of The Bloodhound: Behind the Scenes of a Modern Chiller is an exclusive 45-minute making-of featurette containing interviews the cast and crew. For the first pressing purchasers an illustrated booklet featuring new writing on the film by Anton Bitel is included. There is a reversible cover (see below.)

Patrick Picard's The Bloodhound was very interesting. I loved the minimalist, claustrophobic spaces, older house decor and themes involving isolation. There is plenty going on as a subtext of the narrative. It increasingly gets creepier and more mysterious. I'd love to see more from Picard in the future. The Arrow Blu-ray is at their usual lofty standards of completeness - excellent a/v, director commentary and lengthy featurette. I enjoyed being exposed to this curious film that I likely might never seen otherwise.
