Directed by Jindrich Polák
Czechoslovakia 1977

From Jindich Polák, director of the 1963 Czech sci-fi classic Ikarie XB-1, comes another foray into science-fiction with this lesser known but equally impressive feature Tomorrow I'll Wake Up and Scald Myself with Tea. But unlike the serious hard sci-fi approach of Ikarie, this film is a deliciously demented time-travel romp that manages to be both hilariously silly and impressively ingenious at the same time. In the near-future, time travel has become a possibility, and a group of neo-Nazi's hijack a time-ship in order to go back to 1944 to deliver a hydrogen bomb to Hitler and thus secure victory in WWII Polák expertly balances the film's disparate elements to produce a work of immense pleasure which is unpredictable, irreverent, intelligent and wildly funny - and which emerges one of the great undiscovered sci-fi movies of the 1970s.

Former Nazi Klaus Abard survives to the 1990s by taking anti-ageing pills. He plans to use a time travel trip to return to Germany in 1944 and present Hitler with a hydrogen bomb, so that he can win the war. Unfortunately the pilot, woman-chasing Karel Bures, dies on the morning of the trip and his earnest twin brother Jan impersonates him, without knowing about the plot. The plot goes wrong when they lose the bomb and land near Hitler's bunker in 1941, at a time that the Nazis sense victory. Bures, with two of the plotters, escape capture by the Nazis and make it back to the time machine. Bures programs the machine to return one day before they left, because he figures he can then save his brother and foil the plot.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Second Run Blu-ray (January 2021): Second Run have transferred Jindrich Polák's Tomorrow I'll Wake Up and Scald Myself with Tea to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "new HD remaster from original materials by the Czech National Film Archive". Unfortunately, it doesn't look strong - the image has frequent marks and a soft video-ish image. We presume these elements are the best available. It is in the 1.37:1 aspect ratio on a single-layered disc with a supportive bitrate.

On their Blu-ray, Second Run use a linear PCM dual-mono track (16-bit) in the original Czech language. It is authentically flat and a shade better than the video. The film's score is credited to Karel Svoboda - and some may recognize Pola Negri singing Tango Notturno. Second Run offer optional English subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Second Run Blu-ray offers an all-new Projection Booth commentary with Mike White, Kat Ellinger and Jonathan Owen. There are quite a few Projection Booth commentaries etc. for Czech new wave (or thereabouts) films; Distant Journey, A Blonde in Love, Valerie and her Week of Wonders, The Ear and The Cremator. They discuss this rarely seen comedy/sci-fi comparing it to the energy and pace of Oldrich Lipský's I Killed Einstein, Gentlemen from 1970, the 'double' scenes, at one point describing other critics comparing it as an optimistic Logan's Run, the generally favorable official reception the film received and the ever-present underlying reality of everyday Czech life etc.. I found it informative and insightful. There is also a trailer and the package has a liner notes booklet featuring a new essay by writer and filmmaker Graham Williamson.

Jindrich Polák's Tomorrow I'll Wake Up and Scald Myself with Tea is a unique, intelligent, comedy with other curious elements; the science-fiction, time-travel and Hitler angles. It is more cleaver Czech 70's cinema making points in surreptitious ways. Despite the weak video, I was pleased just to be able to see Tomorrow I'll Wake Up and Scald Myself with Tea and the Second Run Blu-ray has the valuable commentary. Essential for fans of Czech and world cinema.
