Directed by Harry Horner / Allen H. Miner
USA 1956 / 1957

MAN FROM DEL RIO (1956) Screen legend Anthony Quinn (Zorba the Greek) stars as Mexican gunfighter Dave Robles in this classic western directed by Harry Horner (Vicki) and co-starring Katy Jurado (High Noon). After he’s challenged by a few notorious gunfighters who he defeats without breaking a sweat, the town of Mesa hires Dave as their new sheriff. But a crooked saloon owner, Ed Bannister (Peter Whitney, The Big Heat), wants Dave to be placed on his payroll or end up dead like the previous sheriff who was hanged by a lynch mob. The film’s wonderful cast includes John Larch (Play Misty for Me) and Whit Bissell (Not as a Stranger).

THE RIDE BACK (1957) Screen legend Anthony Quinn (Across 110th Street) is crafty, laconic and rugged as a fatally convicted criminal in this sharp, stylish and off-beat western that delivers genuine excitement! Against the backdrop of the violent Mexican border, a lawman’s grim duty and an outlaw’s despair collide. Texas Marshal Chris Hamish (William Conrad, Four Faces West) is sent to Mexico to bring Bob Kallen (Quinn) to justice. But once Kallen is captured, Hamish finds himself allied with the outlaw against marauding, murderous Apaches. When Hamish is seriously wounded and Kallen sees his chance to escape, which will he choose: freedom... or redemption? Lita Milan (The Left Handed Gun) co-stars in this action-packed western beautifully shot by the great Joseph F. Biroc (The Towering Inferno).

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (February 2021): Kino have transferred two 50's Anthony Quinn westerns, as double-feature offering, to a dual-layered Blu-ray. The transfer are advertised as from "Brand New 2K Masters". They both looks pretty solid. Thick, textured, impressive contrast. Both in 1.85:1 and they looked very strong on my system. High bitrates for these 'less-than-1.5-hour' westerns. No damage or digitization - all good.

NOTE: We have added 74 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master dual-tracks (16-bit) in the original English language. There are western related effects - horses and gunfire - in both films - plus a score by Fred Steiner (Time Limit, The St. Valentine's Day Massacre, The Killers, The Twilight Zone) for Man from Del Rio and on The Ride Back the score is by Frank De Vol's (Attack, Ulzana's Raid, The Big Knife, The Flight of the Phoenix, The Dirty Dozen, Kiss Me Deadly), What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?, McLintock) - both supportive and clean in the lossless. Kino offer optional English subtitles for both films on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers only a trailer for each film as extras.

I really enjoyed both of these westerns - especially The Ride Back. Understated, simple - themes of trust and justice - William Conrad is great... and thinner and more handsome than I recall him ever being. Man from Del Rio also has strong points - Katy Jurado almost steals the show. Fast-draw gunfighter Quinn take the sheriff job in a trouble town. Mucho genre appeal. I like this from Kino - two, quick, down and dirty, lesser-seen westerns on one bare-bones Blu-ray. More please! Strongly recommended to fans of vintage westerns and the incredible natural acting abilities of Quinn.
