Directed by Robert Aldrich
USA 1972
From Robert Aldrich, the renowned director of The Dirty Dozen, The Grissom Gang, The Killing of Sister George and The Longest Yard, comes this thrilling western starring screen legend Burt Lancaster (The Train, Elmer Gantry, Valdez Is Coming) in one the best performances of his iconic career. Violence begets violence in this explosive western that pits marauding Apaches against weary Indian fighters and naïve U.S. cavalrymen. Lancaster is McIntosh, a scout assigned to aid the cavalry in tracking down Ulzana (Joaquín Martínez, Jeremiah Johnson) and his band of renegade Indians. As the trail gets hotter, McIntosh tries to teach idealistic young Lieutenant DeBuin (Bruce Davison, The Crucible) that the only way to fight their escalating brutality and violence is with more force. This gritty action epic is the third of four films starring Lancaster and directed by Aldrich; the others were Apache (1954), Vera Cruz (1954) and Twilight’s Last Gleaming (1977). Beautifully shot by Joseph F. Biroc (Too Late the Hero) and featuring strong supporting performances by Richard Jaeckel (The Devil’s Brigade) and Lloyd Bochner (Point Blank). *** Report reaches the US cavalry that the Apache leader Ulzana has left his reservation with a band of followers. A compassionate young officer, Lieutenant DeBuin, is given a small company to find him and bring him back; accompanying the troop is McIntosh, an experienced scout, and Ke-Ni-Tay, an Apache guide. Ulzana massacres, rapes and loots across the countryside; and as DeBuin encounters the remains of his victims, he is compelled to learn from McIntosh and to confront his own naivety and hidden prejudices. |

NOTE:
The below
Blu-ray
captures were taken directly from the
Blu-ray
disc.
On their
Blu-ray,
Kino use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (16-bit) in the original
English language and some Apache languages. There are the usual
western-genre related effects - horses and gunfire plus a supportive
score by
Frank De Vol's (The
Big Knife,
The
Flight of the Phoenix,
The
Dirty Dozen,
Kiss Me Deadly),
What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?,
McLintock) sounding
rich and deep. Kino offer optional English
subtitles on their Region 'A'
Blu-ray.
The Kino
Blu-ray
Ulzana's Raid
has historical significance, Robert Aldrich's deft treatment, Burt
Lancaster and a great supporting cast. It's a
very above-average western with extensively graphic sequences (squeamish
beware). The Blu-ray
a/v and commentary adds further value - strongly recommended! |
