Directed by Robert Aldrich
USA 1956

There’s dissension in the ranks during the Battle of the Bulge! From Robert Aldrich, the acclaimed director of Apache, Kiss Me Deadly, Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte, The Flight of the Phoenix, The Grissom Gang and The Longest Yard, comes this WWII classic starring Jack Palance (Ten Seconds to Hell), Lee Marvin (Prime Cut), Eddie Albert (The Gun Runners), Robert Strauss (Stalag 17), Richard Jaeckel (Ulzana’s Raid), Buddy Ebsen (Breakfast at Tiffany’s) and Peter van Eyck (Five Graves to Cairo). When Lieutenant Joe Costa (Palance) learns that his men died because their commander, Captain Cooney (Albert), was too much of a coward to join the fight, Costa issues a serious warning: Don’t let it happen again! But Cooney’s cowardice forces Costa into a fateful choice: continue to risk the lives of his men... or take the life of the captain. Beautifully shot by Joseph F. Biroc (The Towering Inferno), Attack is a tightly directed and gritty film that packs a wallop.

***

At the end of World War II, a National Guard infantry company must set up artillery observation posts in a strategic area. Lt. Costa (Jack Palance) knows that Capt. Cooney (Eddie Albert) is in command only because of the "connections" he made stateside. Costa has serious doubts concerning Cooney's ability to lead, and when Cooney sends Costa and his men out on a dangerous mission -- and refuses to reinforce them -- all hell breaks loose.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (December 2020): Kino have transferred Robert Aldrich's Attack to Blu-ray. It's on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. The print shows some wear and loss of density but the gritty image is consistent with stable contrast. There is occasional depth and supportive shadow detail. It's a shade heavy and thick but it feels quite film-like.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (16-bit) in the original English language (some German and French.) Attack has plenty of war-related battle sequences with explosions and gunfire - but it isn't overwhelming bass. The film's score is by Frank De Vol's (Ulzana's Raid, The Big Knife, The Flight of the Phoenix, The Dirty Dozen, Kiss Me Deadly), What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?, McLintock) supporting the film very well. Kino offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers only a trailer as an extra. This is surprising as the film is deservedly lauded enough to justify more.

Robert Aldrich's Attack is a well-above-average war film - focusing on the psychological effects of war rather than the macho heroism. It has a stellar cast with Jack Palance, Eddie Albert, Lee Marvin, Richard Jaeckel, Buddy Ebsen, Peter van Eyck, and if you keep your eyes peeled your might see Strother Martin. A commentary would have been a worthy addition but the reasonable price reflects that omission. I am very happy to have seen the film via the Kino Blu-ray. This gets a very strong recommendation. Watch it!
