(aka "Il plenilunio delle vergini" or "The Devil's Crypt" or "Full Moon of the Virgins")

Directed by Luigi Batzella (as Paul Solvay)
Italy 1973

Franz Schiller (Mark Damon, The Fall of the House of Usher, Black Sabbath) goes to Transylvania in search of a cursed ancient ring. His quest brings him to Castle Dracula, where he discovers and falls for the strange and beautiful La Contessa Dolingen de Vries (Rosalba Neri, Amuck, Two Males for Alex, Lady Frankenstein), who turns out to be Countess Dracula, hell-bent on bringing Count Dracula back to life. Schiller is put under the Countess’ evil spell as his twin brother Karl Schiller arrives in Transylvania trying to save his brother before it’s too late. Co-starring funnyman Xiro Papas (Frankenstein ’80), directed by cult director Luigi Batzella (Beast in Heat), photographed by Cult Icon Joe D’Amato (Ator, the Fighting Eagle) and produced by the Great Ralph Zucker (Bloody Pit of Horror)! Blood and breasts abound in this Italian exploitation horror classic that offers yet another variation on the grisly but true story of a 17th-century Hungarian countess, Elizabeth Bathory, who bathed in the blood of over 600 virgins to retain her youthful appearance. This cult euro-horror favorite features very atmospheric and sometimes brutally shocking scenes. Not for the timid, and one to keep away from your young kids.

***

The 1800s: scholarly Karl Schiller believes he's found the ring of the Nibelungen, which holds great power. It's at Castle Dracula. His twin, Franz, a gambler, asks if vampires frighten Karl; Karl shows him an Egyptian amulet, which may protect him. Franz takes the amulet and sets out ahead of his brother, arriving at the castle first. There he finds a countess who invites him to dine. Later that night, Karl arrives. Coincidently, it's the Night of the Virgin Moon, a night that falls every fifty years and draws five virgins from the surrounding village to the castle not be heard from again. Can Karl protect his brother, find the ring, and rescue any of the women?

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Code Red Blu-ray (January 2121): Code Red have transferred Luigi Batzella's (as Paul Solvay) The Devil's Wedding Night to Blu-ray. It is cited as being rhe "U.S. Version Mastered in HD - From the Original Vault Film Elements". It doesn't look great with plenty of inconsistencies. There are some effective 'vampire' visuals sprinkled with dirt and a weak expression that may be more in line with the original production. There are floating damage marks (see samples below.) It is in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio on a single-layered disc with a high bitrate. It's watchable but with decent detail for the most part and a smattering of texture. The image is representative of the source - which appears to be compromised.

NOTE: We have added 70 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Code Red use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (24-bit) in the English language (this is the US version.) It is another advancement in the film's audio and score by Vasili Kojucharov (Django the Bastard, I am Sartana, Your Angel of Death) sounding effective in the lossless. Code Red do not offer subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Code Red Blu-ray offers only an 8-minute 'Katrina Bucket List Theatre' video piece and a trailer.

Wikipedia tells us: "In his book Vampire Films of the 1970s: Dracula to Blacula and Every Fang Between, Gary A. Smith described the film as "a throwback to gothic horror" and that it appeared to be influenced by Hammer vampire films of the 1970s, specifically Twins of Evil.

The films erotic content was cut by Italian censors who demanded that a sex scene be shortened and that "all scenes be eliminated where the man kisses the lower part of the woman's body"

The Devil's Wedding Night is both Euro-trashy and has some nice genre conventions - plus the erotic Rosalba Neri. It's a cheapy but those can satisfy sometimes. It evoked Jean Rollin for me.  The Code Red Blu-ray is essentially bare-bones and would appeal only to a niche of fans that embrace these less-popular 70's horror efforts.
