Directed by Guy Hamilton
UK 1982

HOLIDAYS CAN BE MURDER! When a shrewish stage star is found strangled at a posh island resort, detective Hercule Poirot (Peter Ustinov, Death on the Nile) is called in to investigate. But as the brilliant Belgian learns, it isn’t a matter of who would want the diva dead... but of who wouldn’t. As he follows the twists and turns of clues and motives, Poirot soon discovers that even among the rich and famous, murder never takes a holiday! James Mason, Jane Birkin, Roddy McDowall, Diana Rigg, Maggie Smith, Colin Blakely, Nicholas Clay, Sylvia Miles and Denis Quilley co-star in this Agatha Christie (Murder on the Orient Express) favorite filmed on location in stunning Majorca, Spain, directed by Guy Hamilton (The Mirror Crack’d), adapted by Anthony Shaffer (Frenzy) and filled with classic songs by Cole Porter.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (August 2020): Kino have transferred Guy Hamilton's Evil Under the Sun to Blu-ray. It is on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. It may be a notch better in terms of image quality than the other two; Death on the Nile and The Mirror Crack’d. But it is at least on-par looking quite pleasing with the colors (notable reds) with the gorgeous location of the Balearic Islands in Spain - as shot by Christopher Challis (from Tales of Hoffmann to The Deep). Great in-motion, solid contrast and a very appealing 1080P presentation.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (16-bit) in the original English language. Limited effects but Evil Under the Sun is notable for the score by Cole Porter including You're the Top, Night and Day, Begin the Beguine, I've Got You Under My Skin, I Concentrate On You, Anything Goes, You Do Something To Me, It's De-Lovely, In the Still of the Night, and I Get A Kick Out of You. Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers a new commentary by Howard S. Berger, Steve Mitchell and Nathaniel Thompson who also did the commentaries on the other two, simultaneously released on Blu-ray by Kino; Death on the Nile and The Mirror Crack’d. They discuss Agatha Christie, Guy Hamilton's layers of complexity, and the British cast (Peter Ustinov reprising his role as Poirot, James Mason, Jane Birkin, Roddy McDowall, Diana Rigg, Maggie Smith etc.) and that the movie was treated, marketing and production-wise, as the poor cousin of the other 80's EMI film versions of the Christie mysteries. It didn't fare as well at the box-office but, in a rare circumstance, the movie was actually superior to the book. It's at their usual lofty level of expertise and informative detail. There is a standard vintage 'making of..' with behind the scenes footage, a theatrical trailer, 3 TV spots and the package has reversible art (see below.)

Guy Hamilton's Evil Under the Sun is an excellent crime mystery. Really, as well-made as the others. It was eventually followed by Appointment with Death (1988). Evil Under the Sun is fun (dry wit) and a wonderful mystery - a bona-fide entry in this series of films. The Kino Blu-ray provides a great a/v presentation and has the commentary to augment value. Absolutely recommended to fans!
