UK 1978

Peter Ustinov (Evil Under the Sun) makes his debut as Agatha Christie’s (The Mirror Crack’d) brilliant Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, in this lavish and star-studded follow-up to Murder on the Orient Express. As Poirot enjoys a luxurious cruise down the Nile, a newlywed heiress is found murdered on board and every elegant passenger becomes a prime suspect. Can Poirot identify the killer and motive before the ship of clues reaches the end of its murderous journey? Bette Davis, Mia Farrow, Olivia Hussey, George Kennedy, Angela Lansbury, David Niven, Maggie Smith, Jack Warden, Jane Birkin, Lois Chiles, Jon Finch, Simon MacCorkindale, Harry Andrews, I. S. Johar and Sam Wanamaker co-star in this sumptuous murder-mystery, adapted by Anthony Shaffer (Sleuth) and filmed on location throughout exotic Egypt by the great Jack Cardiff (Black Narcissus). Directed by John Guillermin (The Towering Inferno) with a beautiful score by legendary composer Nino Rota (The Godfather), Death on the Nile won the Oscar for Best Costume Design (Anthony Powell).

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (August 2020): Kino have transferred John Guillermin's Death on the Nile to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from "A 2K RESTORATION". This is quite a visually fetching film and the 1080P is impressive. The transfer is on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. There is some inherent softness (and dullness) but Jack Cardiff's beautifully composed cinematography is well-supported in 1080P. I was very pleased with how this looked on my system.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (16-bit) in the original English language. There aren't an abundance of effects - minor gunplay but a resounding score by Nino Rota (Nights of Cabiria, Juliet of the Spirits, Rocco and His Brothers, Il Bidone, 8 1/2, I Clowns, Purple Noon, The Leopard etc.) that has an epic feel, in the lossless, throughout the film. Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers a new commentary by film historians Howard S. Berger, Steve Mitchell and Nathaniel Thompson. Love these guys and they have a lot of discuss with Death on the Nile - John Guillermin, Cardiff's cinematography, the marvelous cast, the faithfulness to Agatha Christie's book and much more. Again, with the 2020 lockdown - it's phone-like quality but the great information supersedes the below standard audio. There is also the generic 24-minute 'Making of' with behind the scenes footage short interviews with Peter Ustinov and quirky Jane Birkin. The package has reversible art (see below.)

Death on the Nile is definitely on par with Sidney Lumet's 1974 Murder on the Orient Express (not to diminish Albert Finney's amazing performance) but I like Peter Ustinov's Hercule Poirot here and beyond - reprised 4-years later in Evil Under the Sun and three times in TV movies as well as Michael Winner's 1988 Appointment with Death. The cast is golden with Bette Davis, Mia Farrow (excellent here), Olivia Hussey, George Kennedy, Angela Lansbury, David Niven, Maggie Smith, Jack Warden, Jane Birkin etc. I loved the lavish scenery and costumes. And how about it's a great mystery too boot? The Kino Blu-ray has another valuable commentary and some interviews - all good. I rate this one quite highly and it will be a keeper for me. Absolutely recommended!
