(aka "Zombi Holocaust" )
directed by Marino Girolami (as Frank Martin)
Italy 1980
It sparked riots on 42nd Street, spawned a generation of gorehounds on VHS, and forever set an insane standard for Italian mad doctor/zombie/cannibal carnage worldwide: Ian McCulloch (ZOMBIE), Alexandra Delli Colli (THE NEW YORK RIPPER), Sherry Buchanan (TENTACLES) and Donald O'Brien (EMANUELLE AND THE LAST CANNIBALS) star in this blood orgy of gut-munching, eyeball-gouging and face-chopping originally known as ZOMBIE HOLOCAUST, which a notorious American distributor would then re-edit, re-title and re-release as a certified grindhouse masterpiece. |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc. ADDITION: Severin - Region FREE - Blu-ray (July 2016): Firstly, it's pretty obvious that the new 1080P is in advance of the 2002 DVD - both versions are on separate dual-layered disc s with very high bitrates and the quality between the two HD transfers is very similar - lots of consistent grain, clearer, brighter colors etc. Dr. Butcher, MD has its audio transferred via the option of a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel at 1676 kbps (16-bit) or a, similarly robust, linear PCM - both in English - while Zombie Holocaust also has a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel in the English language and offers a linear PCM in Italian (no subtitles) for those keen to check it out. Previously released on high definition stateside in a roundly-panned Blu-ray/DVD combo sporting a flat, filtered, video-like transfer on the Blu-ray and reproducing the encode and contents of the 2002 DVD under comparsion on the DVD side, ZOMBI HOLOCAUST got its first HD overhaul in the UK from 88 Films, creating a new scan of the original 35mm camera negative through a Kickstarter campaign. In the US, Severin Films has also done their own new scan from the negative, but have also gone the extra mile to create a composite of the negative and vault elements from Terry Levene's Aquarius Releasing in order to recreate the film's American theatrical version (the first cut many American viewers were exposed to theatrically or via VHS releases from Paragon or International Video Entertainment's Thriller Video line). This cut of the film goosed up the opening by intercutting shots of the film's zombies with footage from an abandoned anthology produced by Roy Frumkes (DOCUMENT OF THE DEAD) titled TALES THAT WILL RIP YOUR HEART OUT and also trimmed down extraneous dialogue (also replacing a scene of the film's protagonists driving through the same village seen in Lucio Fulci's ZOMBIE with a grainy stock shot of a landing airplane on a runway), and replacing the score of Nico Fidenco - itself a reworking and augmenting of cues Fidenco composed for EMANUELLE AND THE LAST CANNIBALS - with new electronic cues, library music, and a new sound effects track by Walter Sear (who also rescored Fulci's THE BEYOND for R-rated theatrical release by Aquarius as 7 DOORS OF DEATH). (insert Blu-ray a/v comments here) Extras are divided between the two Blu-rays, with the first disc focusing on DR. BUTCHER-related ones starting off with an interview with Aquarius Releasing's Terry Levene who discusses the history of his company and his relationships with independent producers who went to him because - as a distributor and theater chain owner - he could ensure theatrical releases on 42nd Street and in the boroughs - along with his foreign pickups, his promotional and advertising gimmicks for the films, and even ribs Severin for wanting to release some of these films in high definition. TEMPLE OF SCHLOCK's Chris Poggiali and filmmaker Frumkes go on a walking tour of 42nd Street, discussing the area as it once was before former Mayor Giuliani's "clean up" and pointing out the locations of theaters that once showed films like DR. BUTCHER, M.D. and BARBED WIRE DOLLS that now show junk like FROZEN and "Lord of the Dance". Editor Jim Markovic discusses his revisions to ZOMBI HOLOCAUST before sending it over to be rescored, and The Gore Gazette's Rick Sullivan discusses the fanzine scene of the late seventies and early eighties as well as participating in the "Butcher Mobile" promotion for the film. The disc also includes theatrical and video trailers for the film. The second disc shares with ZOMBI HOLOCAUST a new interview with actor Ian McColloch (short because he has never seen the complete film but recalls it as the funnest shooting experience of the three Italian horror films he made), an archival interview with late effects artist Rosario Prestopino (CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD) who describes the how-tos of the effects in detail, and effects artist Maurizio Trani (BURIAL GROUND) who discusses the brain surgery scene effects and his method of sculpting zombie make-up directly on the performers. Biloxi-born actress Sherry Buchanan recalls how she became involved with Italian filmmaking just out of high school by replacing a local production secretary on the Louisiana shoot of Tonino Valerii's MY NAME IS NOBODY and continuing with the production when it went to Spain before getting into modeling in Rome with the help of actor Giancarlo Giannini (SWEPT AWAY) which lead to her Italian movie career. She retired from acting after being doubled without her knowledge in hardcore inserts for the softcore film EMANUELLE AND JOANNA, returned to America to study sociology, got married, and then returned to Rome where she did a few more bit parts in films like CRAWLSPACE and Tinto Brass' CAPRICCIO. The disc also includes a comparison of New York locations then and now, an export trailer and German trailer, as well as actor McCulloch's 1964 folk single "Down by the River". A limited edition, this double-disc edition comes with a reversible figure, but fans who order directly from Severin Films will also get a DOCTOR BUTCHER barf bag. The completeness of this package is unbelievably impressive. Fans of this wayward gore-fest already know that this is the definitive edition of Doctor Butcher, MD / Zombie Holocaust. It retains the sub-genre's appeal. Those keen should indulge. .-Gary Tooze and Eric Cotenas |
