(aka "Goodbye and Amen")

Directed by Damiano Damiani
Italy 1977

John Dannahay (Tony Musante, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage), a CIA agent stationed in Rome, is planning to overthrow an African government. But his plan goes wrong when a corrupt colleague starts shooting people from the roof of a hotel, taking an innocent couple hostage. Director Damiano Damiani (How to Kill a Judge) wields expert tension in this gripping espionage thriller, twisting and turning its tight plot to its sensational finale. Featuring a fantastic supporting cast including Claudia Cardinale (The Day of the Owl), John Steiner (The Case is Closed: Forget It) and Wolfango Soldati (The Heroin Busters), Goodbye & Amen is one of the great 1970s Italian action thrill rides, set to a haunting score by Guido and Maurizio De Angelis (Torso, Keoma).

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Radiance Blu-ray (January 2024): Radiance have transferred Damiano Damiani's Goodbye & Amen to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "New 2023 restoration of the film from the original camera negative presented with Italian and, for the first time on home video, English audio options". There are two versions of the film presented here - Italian and English language with the latter being over 7-minutes shorter. They are not seamlessly branched but the image quality seems comparable for the examples that I looked at. It's decent - not particularly dynamic with a slight blue (teal) leaning, some rich texture and a few sequences of depth. The 1080P was often very pleasing.

On their Blu-ray, Radiance offer DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (24-bit) in both Italian and an optional English language track version. A screen indicates "The English Soundtrack was severely damaged and exhibits some challenging moments. Restoration was attempted but the quality of the materials proved too difficult in some places. It is presented as a Curio, in its the first and only distribution of this track on home media as of this release." Goodbye & Amen has aggressive (gunfire etc.) and it comes across predictably hollow with modest bass. The score was by Guido and Maurizio de Angelis (Torso, Keoma, A Blade in the Dark, 2019 After the Fall of New York, The Mountain of the Cannibal God) and can be quite boisterous at times and totally suitable to the genre. I only sampled the English track and it was weaker and I believe the stated caveat that it has issues. Radiance offer optional English translated and English (SDH) subtitles - see sample below - on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Radiance Blu-ray offers a new commentary by 'Eurocrime experts' Nathaniel Thompson and Howards S. Berger. A great pairing. Luckily they cover so much about this film as very little is written about; director Damiani, the cast, production details - it is at their exceptional level of well-researched commentarist data. Bravo! Radiance include a new (2023) 40-minute interview editor Antonio Siciliano who describes his start in the film industry, working with Damiano Damiani and Goodbye & Amen. Filmed in February 2023. There is also a 24-minute archival interview (filmed in June 2013) with actor Wolfango Soldati (Harry Lambert in Goodbye & Amen) who relates his experiences making Goodbye & Amen. Filmed in June 2013. The package has a reversible sleeve featuring designs based on original posters, a LE booklet featuring new writing by Italian crime cinema expert Lucia Rinaldi and is presented in full-height Scanavo packaging with removable OBI strip leaving packaging free of certificates and markings.

Damiano Damiani (The Most Beautiful Wife, The Day of the Owl, How to Kill a Judge, A Bullet for the General) is known for poliziotteschi (60's + 70s Italian crime films) and politically-steeped cinema. Goodbye & Amen would be more heavy on the former. An unbalanced, former military man, goes 'off the deep end' in Rome murdering two civilians with a long distance rifle before taking an adulterous couple hostage in a hotel room. He claims to be CIA and his actions foil an, unrelated, assassination attempt. Tony Musante (The Bird with the Crystal Plumage), Claudia Cardinale (8 1/2, Blindfold) and John Forsythe (Madame X) play significant roles. I thought the tall, gaunt, English actor, John Steiner (The Devil Within Her), was quite effective as the mentally ill killer. Multi-lingual, he was a favorite of Italian T+A filmmaker Tinto Brass (Salon Kitty,) found himself in demand as an exploitation star in Italy, and was in a long-term relationship with director John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy.)  Goodbye & Amen is quite riveting and is certainly a product of the genre and its era. I am pleased with the Radiance Blu-ray - a darn good film I had never seen before - edifying commentary, interviews, booklet. Recommended to fans of the cast or gripping 70's Italian thrillers.
