(aka "Corri uomo corri" or "Big Gundown 2: Run, Man, Run" or "Run, Man, Run")

Directed by Sergio Sollima
Italy / France 1968

Sergio Sollima’s third (and final) western film; Run, Man Run stars Tomas Milian (The Big Gundown, Django Kill… If You Live, Shoot!) as Cuchillo, reprising his role as the crafty knife thrower from Sollima’s earlier film, The Big Gundown.

After aiding in the escape of a fellow desperado, Cuchillo is given the location for a stash of hidden gold intended to fund the Mexican Revolution. Pursued by mercenaries, bandits, corrupt officials, an American gunslinger, and even his fiancé – Cuchillo will have to use all his tricks to stay alive.

This “Zapata Western” concludes Sollima’s triptych of Western’s that examined violence, politics, and revolution – and it is a suitably epic conclusion, filled with action and violence accompanied by a brilliant score by Bruno Nicolai and Ennio Morricone. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Run, Man, Run fully uncut for the first time ever in the UK, in a worldwide premiere on Blu-ray from a definitive 4K restoration.

***

The legendary Tomas Milian stars as Cuchillo, a knife-throwing thief on the run from murderous bandits, sadistic American agents, his hot-blooded fiancée and a sheriff turned bounty hunter, all of whom are gunning for a hidden fortune in gold that could finance the Mexican Revolution.

ADDITION: Masters of Cinema Blu-ray (January 2023): Masters of Cinema have transferred Sergio Sollima's Run, Man, Run ("Corri uomo corri") to Blu-ray. It is cited as being "fully uncut for the first time ever in the UK, in a worldwide premiere on Blu-ray from a definitive 4K restoration with additional colour grading completed exclusively for this release" for the 'uncut version' (first Blu-ray) and the original theatrical release on a second Blu-ray. Both versions have max'ed out bitrates and look of the same 1080P quality. There are pleasing, visible, grain textures, realistic colors and a consistent HD presentation in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio.

On their Blu-ray, Masters of Cinema use linear PCM dual-mono tracks (24-bit) in the original Italian language, and optional English DUB for the 'uncut version and English-only for the original theatrical version. Run, Man, Run has man aggressive and western genre audio effects including plenty of gunfire. There is a hollowness which I would presume to be faithful to the original. The score was by Bruno Nicolai (A Full Day's Work, The Colors of the Dark, The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave, Sartana Will Pay, Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key, Face to Face, The Perverse Countess, Torso, Ten Little Indians, Pasolini's Hawks and the Sparrows) and an uncredited Ennio Morricone (For A Few Dollars More, A Fistful of Dollars, Violent City, Grand Slam Revolver, The Great Silence, Who Saw Her Die?, The Black Belly of the Tarantula, The Fifth Cord, Luna, Danger Diabolik, Two Mules For Sister Sara, A Bullet for the General, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion, The French Conspiracy, U Turn, Stay As You Are etc. etc.) with the latter iconic composer's contribution debated (his theme 'Run, Man, Run' - sung by Milian was in The Big Gundown) but there isn't much doubt to the influence being easy to ascertain with typical 'waa waa' wordless male chorus from the opening (taken from The Big Gundown?) with Millian narrating - and Puccini-like chords throughout. Pasta western fans will hear and appreciate the defined sonic legacy of the genre music with this delightfully bombastic score. Masters of Cinema offer optional English (translation) and SDH subtitles on their 'uncut' version and no subtitle options on the English theatrical version. Both discs are Region 'B'-locked Blu-rays.

The Masters of Cinema Blu-ray package offers a new commentary by Barry Forshaw (author of Italian Cinema: Arthouse to Exploitation) and Kim Newman (author of Wild West Movies: Or How the West Was Found, Won, Lost, Lied About, Filmed and Forgotten) on the 'Uncut Version'. They discuss how Sergio Sollima has similar themes that run through many of his films, his diversity of genres (compared to Richard Fleischer), Tomas Milian (Solima's Face to Face - made the year before), this being a sequel to The Big Gundown and much more. There is a new audio commentary on the 'Theatrical Version' with Howard Hughes (author of Once Upon A Time in the Italian West: The Filmgoers' Guide to Spaghetti Westerns) and filmmaker Richard Knew. They talk about the animated art of the unusual opening credits depicting civil war. Milian's character of Manuel 'Cuchillo' Sanchez first introduced in The Big Gundown, the locations and much more. There is also a 20-minute interview with film scholar Stephen Thrower (author of Murderous Passions, revised and expanded edition, Volume 1: The Delirious Cinema of Jesús Franco.) He gives well-researched background on the production, how it lacked an American star, plenty on Millian etc.. Masters of Cinema include the 'Alternate opening credits' and a theatrical trailer. The package boasts an O-card Slipcase featuring new artwork by Tony Stella, a reversible poster and reversible sleeve plus a collector’s booklet featuring two new essays by Howard Hughes, covering both the film and the “Zapata Western” sub-genre.

Sergio Sollima's Run, Man, Run is the least serious of the three westerns he made (with Face to Face and The Big Gundown) and it ventures into a comedic sprit. It is the final chapter of that political-western trilogy by the director and is sometimes labeled as part of the “Zapata Western” sub-genre that take place in the Mexican Revolution era. Run, Man, Run is as good as I anticipated with the team-up of Sollima and Milian - it includes bounty hunters, hidden gold, double-crosses and a great windmill scene. I always like seeing Linda Veras (Sieglinda Veras, Sabata) - a former glamour model - and Chelo Alonso who was in a lot of the Peplum sword and sandal spectacles (Son of Samson) proving her cult, sex symbol, status. Those who appreciate spaghetti westerns will gravitate to this title. The Masters of Cinema double Blu-ray package offer so much with a 4K restoration for both cuts of Run, Man, Run, excellent cover art, two new commentaries, a Stephen Thrower piece and a booklet. Absolutely recommended!
