A HAUNTED TURKISH BATHHOUSE features Nikkatsu star Naomi Tani as an abused wife sold to a brothel to cover her husband's debts. The deceitful husband is actually behind it all, in cahoots with the brothel madame, who is his lover. Tani discovers the truth and gets tortured to death. However, the dead woman's soul seeks vengeance from a most unusual quarter. The film is a bizarre mixture of Japanese erotica, gangster film and "ghost cat" horror movie, all popular genres in the 1960s and 70s. It is a heady cocktail, and makes for an entertaining and unpredictable film that rocks along at a giddy pace. Director Yamaguchi is best known for his DELINQUENT GIRL BOSS and SISTER STREET FIGHTER movies as well as the Sonny Chiba film WOLF GUY.

ADDITION: Mondo Macabro Blu-ray (January 2023): Mondo Macabro have transferred Kazuhiko Yamaguchi's A Haunted Turkish Bathhouse to Blu-ray. It is on a single-layered disc with a high bitrate. There are a few frame-specific speckles and marks. Colors are fairly passive and there is inherent softness. The 1080P is mostly consistent with no egregious damage or compression issues. It looked pleasing on my system.

On their Blu-ray, Mondo Macabro use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (24-bit) in the original Japanese language. No DUB. A Haunted Turkish Bathhouse has plenty of very nasty beatings from gangsters, a livid husband and jealous, swarming, women. The score is credited to Hiroshi Babauchi - better knows as a producer his only other film composition was Sonny Chiba's Wolf Guy. It had one scene where is resembled like Gill Melle's electronic-based edginess. Dialogue is clean and consistent in the lossless transfer. Mondo Macabro offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A'-locked Blu-ray.

The Mondo Macabro Blu-ray offers a new commentary by Samm Deighan. This is a pretty 'out there' title and I can't wait to tuck into her astute observations. She always impresses me. Patrick Macias talks about A Haunted Turkish Bathhouse in a 7-minute piece entitled White Cat in Showa Soapland and about Toei studio's horror efforts in the 4-minute Silent Waves. There is a theatrical trailer and Mondo Macabro's usual, long, trailer reel that I never tire of. This is one of my favorite production companies with the best opening of... any of them.

Kazuhiko Yamaguchi's A Haunted Turkish Bathhouse is a graphic Japanese erotic horror film. Naomi Tani (Fairy in a Cage) was fearless in her filmic expressions. This was only one of two film credits for Misa Ohara. A Haunted Turkish Bathhouse pushes the envelope with full body Nuru massage, anilingus (condom on tongue,) "69", sexual assault, bondage and distasteful beatings of women. Wow. Revenge comes in the form of a black cat demon reincarnation - with a menacing growl. I loved my viewing. It's hard to believe that there was an era where this Japanese sub-genre was made. A Haunted Turkish Bathhouse a film I am surprised at - making me covet it. The Mondo Macabro Blu-ray exposes this rarity and we applaud their efforts with a commentary (by one of the best) and more. Mondo Macabro's existence is so important to DVDBeaver.
