Stray Cat Rock Collection [Blu-ray]

Delinquent Girl Boss (1971)      Wild Jumbo (1970)     Sex Hunter (1970)

Machine Animal (1970)       Beat '71 (1971)

The Stray Cat Rock series stars Meiko Kaji (Lady Snowblood, Blind Woman's Curse) who with these five films began her reign as the badass action queen of the era. In these five tales of rebellious youth she stars alongside the gorgeous Bunjaku Han (Love Letter) and Tatsuya Fuji (In the Realm of the Senses).

In Delinquent Girl Boss, the girl gang go up against criminal organisation the Seiyu Group, following a fixed boxing match blood is shed and friendships are tested. In Wild Jumbo, Kaji and the gang get involved in a kidnapping and the robbery of a religious organisation. In Sex Hunter Kaji's girl gang go up against The Eagles, a group led by Fuji where sex and violence erupt over the treatment of half-breeds . In Machine Animal gang rivalry is once again the focus with two gangs pursuing some LSD pushers looking to move a big score. The series swansong, Beat 71, sees Kaji framed and sent to prison by her boyfriend s father and with the help of some hippies she strives to be re-united.

Directed by genre veterans Yasuharu Hasebe (Female Prisoner Scorpion: #701's Grudge Song) and Toshiya Fujita (
Lady Snowblood) the films feature a psychedelic mix of girl gangs, bikers, sex, drugs and rock and roll with plenty of ass-kicking to boot, all captured in a delirious mash up of pop aesthetics including split screens, freeze frames, injections of colour, frenetic editing and dizzying angles, making these films a riotous joy from beginning to end.

Comments:

NOTE: These Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

Firstly, the 6 films are divided on the 4 Blu-ray discs as follows:

Disc 1) Delinquent Girl Boss (1971), Wild Jumbo (1970) and Sex Hunter (1970)

Disc 2) Machine Animal (1970)  and Beat '71 (1971)

Firstly, this is a limited edition (to only 2,000 copies.) This is the five-film 'Stray Cat Rock' (aka 'Alleycat Rock') Collection - all in 1080P.

I will make a few general comments.

Video: There are two dual-layered Blu-ray disc sharing 3 films and 2 films respectively. I've included all the technical stats for each film below. The quality is subject to the sources - which generally is not pristine. The visuals are consistent and look solid enough in 1080P. We only had 'Sex Hunter' on DVD and we've compared some captures below. The HD is quite a notable upgrade. The image quality is, as per the genre and time period, thick with little damage - a very few vertical scratches. This is probably the best way to present these 1.5 hour features - as I doubt a significant increase in bitrate would improve the appearance drastically. There is a shade of depth and colors are bright and rich - Beat '71 tends to look the sharpest although not by a lot.

Audio: is all liner PCM mono and most of the imperfections remain minimal. These seem to be accurate-to-original audio transfers - flat and the occasional funky music exports some depth and a crisp high-end. There are optional subtitles for each film. I always remark how awkward the dialogue is - not a function of the translation but more part of the genre and cultural differences. The two Blu-ray discs are region FREE.

Supplements: The first disc, with three features, has only trailers for Wild Jumbo Trailer and Sex Hunter. The second disc offers three interviews, each about 1/2 an hour with English subtitles. They are with Yasuharu Hasebe director of Delinquent Girl Boss, Sex Hunter and Machine Animal, Tatsuya Fuji, the star of all five films, and Yoshio Harada, an actor best known for playing 'rebels' in a career that spanned six decades. These are informative interviews reminiscing on the productions with an occasional anecdote. The 2nd disc also has trailers for Machine Animal and Beat '71. The package has an extensive collector's booklet featuring new writing on the films by Japanese cinema expert Jasper Sharp.

The Stray Cat Rock films have their own addictive appeal, Like many of the Japanese 'Pinky' films they lean to adult content, occasionally exploitive with a dash of softcore sexuality sequences. It also has themes of youth rebellion, crime with femme-fatales, conflict and discontent. They are quite entertaining, in their own obvious way. It's actually hard not to get-into these films to some degree when watching this set. They retain a fun side and the Asian gals are usually very cute with unexpected characterizations. I think those familiar and keen should probably order sooner as I don't know how long the 2,000 limited copies will last. A commentary or two would have been cool but this is still a solid package. Recommended!

The first part of the Nora-neko rokku ("Alley Cat Rock") series was originally Nikkatsu Studios' answer to the rivaling Toei Studios' Delinquent Boss series, but spawned four sequels thanks to its popularity. Onna banchô, the first movie in the series, takes place in Shinjuku, Tokyo where rivaling youth gangs are constantly trying to one-up each other in toughness. An all-girl gang led by Mei (Meiko Kaji) gets involved in dangerous circles when Mei's boyfriend Michio (Kôji Wada), wants to join a powerful yakuza organization called Seiyu but inadvertently loses the gangsters' money in a fixed boxing match. Of course, Mei's gang is not going to leave him to the gangsters, especially when helped by an enigmatic and independent female biker called Ako (Akiko Wada).

A group of wild young people, after enjoying antics in a jeep, kidnap a wealthy woman driver (Bunjaku Han) by shooting out her car tires. They set her free but she forms an attraction to a member of the group. They begin a romance and she tells him she is the mistress of the leader of a religious organization called Shinkyo Gakkai. The group dig up a stash of weapons buried in a school courtyard at the end of the second world war. They plan to rob the organization. When the first film in the series Alleycat Rock: Female Boss proved to be a success, Nikkatsu released this sequel only three months later. Director Fujita had previously made teenage delinquent movies for the studio. The weapons seen in the film are the Nambu pistol and the type 11 light machine gun, both WW2 era Japanese military weapons

Mako and her girl friends enter a dispute with rival street gangsters The Eagles, a band of racist macho pigs led by the evil Baron, who hate half-breeds (descendents of afro-American and Japanese couples). When one of the girls start dating a half-breed, they start a terror campaign to take all of them out of town. Mako and her gang fight back, helping their new friend Kazuma find his long gone sister.

Toshiya Fujita brings the five film Stray Cat Rock series to a highly enjoyable end. Like his previous installment, Wild Jumbo, Beat ’71 is an easy going youth drama that does not follow Yasuharu Hasebe’s wild gang film path. Instead Fujita deals with social issues. The film follows a hippie community lead by Yoshitaro (Yoshio Harada). They decide to leave their trailer in Shinjuku and travel to countryside by bicycle to save their friend Furiko (Meiko Kaji) who has been falsely accused for murder. The real killer – although it was mainly self defense – is Furiko’s boyfried Takaaki (Takeo Chii) who is being controlled by his politician father. Takaaki would rather live free as a hippie, but his father is forcing him to become a businessman.
