(aka "Seven Days... Seven Nights")

Directed by Peter Brook
France / Italy 1960

Screen legends Jeanne Moreau (Jules and Jim, The Train) and Jean-Paul Belmondo (Le Doulos, Le Magnifique) star in this mesmerizing drama from the brilliant mind of Marguerite Duras (Hiroshima Mon Amour, India Song). Moreau, who won the award for Best Actress at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival, is Anne Desbarèdes, a wealthy, bored housewife who believes she has witnessed a murder in a quayside bistro. Rushing to the scene of the crime, she strikes up a conversation with Chauvin (Belmondo), an employee of her husband who also saw the crime. The troubled woman continues to return to the café, increasingly identifying herself with the murder victim and becoming obsessed with Chauvin. Director Peter Brook (Lord of the Flies, Marat/Sade) and cinematographer Armand Thirard (The Wages of Fear, Diabolique) create repetitive patterns of sound and image that reflect Anne’s frustration with the “moderato cantabile” nature of her life and the absence of true passion that draws her inexorably to the café and Chauvin.

***

A wealthy and bored woman (Moreau) is witness of a murder in affection and meets another witness (Belmondo). She asks him about the history of the victim and falls in love with him.

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (September 2021): Kino have transferred Peter Brook's Seven Days... Seven Nights to Blu-ray. It looks gorgeous on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. The 2.35:1 frame is filled with healthy grain. There are beautiful landscapes used in Seven Days... Seven Nights. The black and white 1080P is exported in a very film-like fashion. The HD presentation fabulous - clean and consistent.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (24-bit) in the original French language. There are no dominant audio effects used. Seven Days... Seven Nights repeatedly utilizes the music of Antonio Diabelli including Sonatine nº 8 - Andantino, Sonatine en fa majeur nº 1 and Sonatine en sol majeur nº 6 all performed by Marie-Antoinette Pictet. It sounds brilliant - supporting the film deft movement wonderfully in the lossless transfer. Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers a new commentary by filmmaker Daniel Kremer. This is excellent - he looks at the film world, cinema schools and movements at the time of Seven Days... Seven Nights. He brings up Losey, Bresson, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Alain Resnais, Visconti, Tony Richardson - he mentions the potential casting of Richard Burton in the film, he discusses Jeanne Moreau, Belmondo, director Peter Brook (extensively in the second half), Marguerite Duras and much more. He states that Seven Days... Seven Nights was an influence on his own film Overwhelm the Sky adapted from the Charles Brockden Brown novel; "Edgar Huntly, or Memoirs of a Sleepwalker". I was very impressed with this commentary - Kremer is quite brilliant. It extends beyond an academic look at the film and he covers and immense amount of ground. One of my favorite commentaries of the year, to date. There are also trailers but none for Seven Days... Seven Nights.

Peter Brook's Seven Days... Seven Nights is a film of subtleties and emotional whispers. I relished its mysteries in my first viewing and thoroughly enjoyed the illuminating Daniel Kremer commentary in my subsequent exposure. What an impressive package - thanks to Kino for this valuable Blu-ray. The nuanced film (Losey-an as Kremer comments), desirable a/v and excellent commentary give this a very strong recommendation! Wow.
