Directed by Sidney Lanfield
USA 1947
Comedy legend Bob Hope (The Ghost Breakers, Road to Morocco) teams up with director Sidney Lanfield (My Favorite Blonde, The Lemon Drop Kid) for the rollicking comedy-thriller Where There’s Life. Hope stars as Michael Valentine, a timid New York radio personality who has his world turned upside down when he is named the long-lost heir to a far-away kingdom. He soon becomes the target of spies, kidnapping, death plots and two determined women: his ex-fiancée (Vera Marshe, The Crimson Key) and General Grimovitch (Signe Hasso, The House on 92nd Street), a beautiful blonde militant who’s trying to get him safely to his new country. Meanwhile, his ex’s Manhattan cop brothers and revolutionaries from his new “kingdom” are all out to get him! Featuring a perfect blend of comedy and action, this classic showcases Bob Hope in top form and co-stars William Bendix (Lifeboat), George Coulouris (Citizen Kane) and George Zucco (The Cat and the Canary). *** In a far off country, their king is critically wounded after an assassination attempt and the only heir is a timid New York radio personality, Michael Valentine (Bob Hope). After reluctantly traveling to his father's homeland, Michael is not happy that he's become the target of the same terrorist organization that attacked the king. |

On their
Blu-ray,
Kino use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (24-bit) in the
original English language. Where There's Life
has only a few aggressive moments that don't export a lot of depth. The
uncredited score is by the trifecta of Charles Bradshaw (The
Lady Eve,
The
Miracle of Morgan's Creek,
Sullivan's Travels),
Van Cleave (Conquest
of Space,
Robinson
Crusoe on Mars,
The Colossus of New York,
The Space Children, William Castle's
Project X, and 12
The Twilight Zone episodes, among others)
and
Victor Young (The
Accused,
Strategic
Air Command,
The Ghost Breakers,
The
Sun Shines Bright,
The Accused,
Johnny Guitar,
China Gate etc.) supporting
the film adeptly via the lossless transfer. Kino offer optional English
subtitles on their Region 'A'
Blu-ray.
The Kino
Blu-ray
offers only a 'Kino Bob Hope Promo' trailer
running 4 minutes with clips from a variety of the comedian's films and
complete trailers for 13 Bob Hope movies.
The Bob Hope comedy-thriller Where There's Life
is very fun. The title comes from a line in Don Quixote - the
Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes. "Where there's life, there's
hope" references the star Bob Hope. While not one of his best of
this genre it still has appeal with the protagonists on the run as they
eventually fall in love. The bare-bones Kino Blu-ray
suits fans of Hope and it works well as the start of a double feature
with one of the 'Road'
pictures or
The Cat and the Canary (which would be one of my personal
favorites.) You know what you are getting with one of these entries and
that can be comforting if you are in the appropriate mood. |
