directed by Preston Sturges
USA 1944

An unquestionable masterpiece from Sturges' purple period with comedy that is broad, blasphemous and funny as all hell.

Trudy Kockenlocker (a manipulative but sweet Hutton), the daughter of a widowed small-town police constable (a put-upon Demarest) with a soft spot for men in uniform wakes one morning after a wild farewell party for her country's servicemen, to find herself married and pregnant. She has no recollection of who to or how. Enter lovesick tool Norval Jones (a brilliantly gormless Bracken), only too eager to help the woman he's carried a torch for over the years.

And it's breathless, knockabout stuff from here on in, the gags and pratfalls unrelenting. Make no mistake, there's nothing particularly polite here, and none of the heart-warming decency often attributed to other classic screwballs. Sturges lets it all hang out, never passes over a joke and somehow manages to sustain the pace and quality.

Comments:

This is a very good DVD with excellent grey level separation and contrast. Good optional subtitles. The image is sharper than I expected and there is some minor film grain peeking through - impressive job by Paramount. They have also included two nice short supplements in Preston Sturges and The Miracle of Morgan's Creek and  Censorship: Morgan's Creek vs. the Production Code.

Overall this is the best $ / film value of the year. A masterpiece film transferred very well with some decent relevant extras... and at $10 US. Easily the biggest no-brainer purchase of the year. Our highest recommendation!
