Directed by Tom DeSimone
USA 1986

The Pridemore Juvenile Detention Facility isn't just a place for troubled teenage girls to serve their time. Instead, it's a living hell filled with sexual depravity and violence. Jenny, a fresh inmate, becomes the de facto protector of Lisa, an innocent young girl forced to be a plaything to anyone after her body. Then there's Charlie, a hardened teenaged lesbian who torments her fellow prisoners through brutal acts of sexual sadism. But no one instills more fear in even the toughest girls than the sadistic Edna who, with a blind eye turned by money-hungry Warden Sutter, delights in terrorizing her beautiful prisoners. However, the girls have had enough and things are about to change at Pridemore...

From acclaimed cult filmmaker Tom DeSimone (The Concrete Jungle), REFORM SCHOOL GIRLS is a sublimely trashy and over-the-top women in prison/juvenile delinquent classic, reframed for the grimy punk sensibilities of the 1980s. Starring punk rock superstar Wendy O. Williams (Candy Goes to Hollywood), cult film legend Sybil Danning (The Red Queen Kills Seven Times), and featuring a career performance from former Warhol Superstar Pat Ast (Paul Morrissey's Heat).

***

Jenny is sent to a women's reform school. It is run by evil warden Sutter and her henchwoman Edna. Jenny will stop at nothing to escape but she also has to deal with Charlie the bully.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Vinegar Syndrome Blu-ray (March 2022): Vinegar Syndrome have transferred Tom DeSimone's Reform School Girls to Blu-ray. It is cited as being "Newly scanned & restored in 2K from its 35mm interpositive". It's very clean and consistent on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. It is in the original 1.85: 1 aspect ratio and has that 80's stock feel but there is depth and decent detail in close-ups. I can't imagine it looking significantly better than this 1080P transfer.

NOTE: We have added 60 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Vinegar Syndrome use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the original English language. Reform School Girls has plenty of aggressive moments with the gals taking umbrage on everything they can - including each other. There is some restrained depth. The music is composed by Dan Siegel (his only feature score), sounding clean if authentically unremarkable via the lossless transfer. Vinegar Syndrome offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Vinegar Syndrome Blu-ray offers many supplements. There are two commentaries - an archival track with writer/director Tom DeSimone hosted by Martin Lewis. He discusses what inspired him to make this film, details of the production, cast etc. There is a second commentary track with Queer Film Historian Elizabeth Purchell talks about Tom DeSimone's career, the cast of women, drawing from the past genre efforts, it's humor etc. "So Young, So Bad, So What" is a 54-minute making-of documentary featuring brief snippets with it's cast and crew. "Pat Ast Superstar" is a 7-minute interview with theatrical producer Alan Eichler talking about the actress how she was a native New Yorker who worked as a receptionist and clerk in a box factory. She passed in 2001. "Ode o Wendy" is a 7-minute interview with author and critic Breanna Whipple (self-described "bookworm and a film junkie") on the life and career of actress Wendy O. Williams who died in 1998 at 48-years of age. She was th lead singer for the infamous 1980s punk rock band The Plasmatics. There is 1 1/4 hours worth of very poor video footage from the stage play "Women Behind Bars" - a camp black comedy starring Pat Ast. It is really unwatchable the quality is so poor. There are also original trailers and the package has reversible cover artwork.

Tom DeSimone's Reform School Girls is more serious than spoof, imo - but even the 'serious' can produce some nostalgic smiles. DeSimone has done his fair share of 'adult' films and a few 'women in prison' efforts like 82's The Concrete Jungle and before that Chained and Prison Girls in the early 70s. This is probably more aptly described as an homage with Wendy O. Williams, Pat Ast and unforgettable she-devil Sybil Danning who is remembered for many titillating tiles including Chained Heat (another of this genre) and Rob Zombie's fake trailer "Werewolf Women of the S.S." for "Grindhouse" release. She is still working today. I have a real soft-spot for this genre - even the more exploitive variety. Reform School Girls is actually what you might anticipate - catfights, nudity, violence, foul-mouthed, street-smart characters and an abused innocent one. I am pleased with the Vinegar Syndrome Blu-ray with their usual strong a/v support of the film and commentaries and extras. This is a fun ride that we can endorse.
