WOMEN IN PRISON Triple Pack

Chained Heat (1983)       Red Heat (1985)       Jungle Warriors (1984)

Mr. Skin and Panik House Entertainment Present the Unholy Trinity of Women in Prison Films! CHAINED HEAT, widely regarded as the greatest women-in-prison film of all time, finally comes to DVD in a totally uncut, re-mastered version. This triple-pack of 'boobs behind bars' mid-80s exploitation classics will only be in print for a limited time. CHAINED HEAT - Linda Blair (THE EXORCIST) stars as Carol Henderson, a woman sentenced to 18 months in federal prison after accidentally killing a man. With the perverted warden (John Vernon, Animal House) seducing the inmates and two rival gangs fighting a race war, Carol struggles to survive her remaining days in the sleazy slammer. Also stars cult film favorites Sybil Danning, Tamara Dobson and Stella Stevens. Newly re-mastered in anamorphic widescreen and presented totally uncut for the first time in North America! RED HEAT - Linda Blair heads back to prison as American tourist Christine Carlson, a woman wrongly sentenced to three years in a brutal East German penitentiary after being forced to admit to false charges of espionage. Tormented by the evil prisoner Sofia (Sylvia Kristel, Emmanuelle), Christine must fight for her life as her fiancée tries to rescue her from the sadistic hell behind bars. Presented in Anamorphic Widescreen. JUNGLE WARRIORS - A group of gorgeous models flies to a South American country to scout locations for a photo session. When their plane is shot down, the models are imprisoned and subjected to horrible torture and rape by an evil drug lord. In an effort to escape, the girls grab some firepower, take revenge, and try to shoot their way to freedom! Stars Sybil Danning and John Vernon. Presented in Anamorphic Widescreen, includes Trailers for All Three Features, Video Interviews with Sybil Danning and Stella Stevens.

(aka "Das Frauenlager" )

directed by Paul Nicholas
USA 1983

Sentenced to eighteen months for accidentally killing a man with her car, "prison virgin" Carol Henderson (Linda Blair, THE EXORCIST) catches the eye of Ericka (Sybil Danning, THE HOWLING II) who is the prison's main source for cocaine (with the help of prison doctor Lester [Henry Silva, THE ITALIAN CONNECTION] and Captain Taylor [Stella Stevens, THE MANITOU]). She also comes to the attention of coke-snorthing warden Bacman (John Vernon, SAVAGE STREETS) who likes to videotape his hot tub encounters with vulnerable prisoners. When Ericka and her cohorts do away with his prison snitch Debbie (Monique Gabrielle, HOT MOVES), Bacman promises to make things easy for Carol if she keeps her eyes open (since Ericka's coke trade is horning in on his own action). When Carol witnesses an attack on a black inmate by Spider (Carol White, HELTER SKELTER), she tells Duchess (Tamara Dobson, CLEOPATRA JONES AND THE CASINO OF GOLD) who kills Spider. Horrified, Carol tells Bacman everything she knows about Ericka and Lester's drug trade (and other activies) only to be raped herself by the warden. When Bacman fires Lester, Captain Taylor decides she wants to be in charge of the prison. Sympathetic inmate Val (Sharon Hughes, THE LAST HORROR FILM) plots to seduce Bacman to get the videotape of Carol's rape, but Taylor drowns Bacman in the hot tub and has Val beaten to death. With her dying breath, she tells Carol what happened. Taylor rehires Lester and sets up Ericka for Val's murder. Carol rallies Duchess and the other prisoners to bust Ericka out and create a riot so Carol can get to the incriminating videotape (which now includes Bacman's murder) but Taylor is determined to silence her. CAGED HEAT is not only the best film in the set, but also a well-regarded entry in the women in prison sub-genre. The violence, nudity, and rape scenes are leavened by the right amount of camp from Vernon's coke-addled warden, Stevens' sneering warden, and the posturing of "touch chicks" Danning and Dobson (Duchess calls Ericka a "chalk-faced whore" and they have a memorable chain-swinging, switch-blade slashing tussle in the yard). Blair is a great sympathetic center for the film (along with Hughes). The film also benefits from the slick cinematography of the always dependable Mac Ahlberg's (who also photographed Blair in the Gothic-tinged slasher HELL NIGHT) and the pulsing score Joseph Conlon (SCREAM/THE OUTING). Producer Billy Fine next worked with Blair in SAVAGE STREETS.

Panik House announced CHAINED HEAT in 2006 before the label dropped off the radar. Internet celebrity nudity site Mr. Skin stepped in to help get this WOMEN IN PRISON TRIPLE FEATURE set released this year as a limited edition (it will go out of print at the end of the year when Panik House's rights expire). Panik House's disc of CHAINED HEAT is its first uncut DVD release in the states (the Showtime cable version ran only 88 minutes and other versions have run somewhere in between; Anchor Bay UK also released CHAINED HEAT in a set with the other two films seen in Panik House's set, but their version ran 92 minutes [PAL speed] and was actually shorter than the BBFC-cut video release). It is presented on disc 1 in an attractive dual-layer, anamorphic, progressive encoding with fine mono audio.

Besides the film's theatrical trailer, disc 1 also includes interviews with Stella Stevens and Sybil Danning who fondly remember the film and the cast. The film can be played with an optional minute-long introduction by Mr. Skin, which spends an equal amount of time informing us who in the film gets naked and promoting his website.

(aka "Red Heat - Unschuld hinter Gittern" )

directed by Robert Collector
West Germany/USA/Austria 1985

CHAINED HEAT's Linda Blair is back in prison in RED HEAT. This time' she's Christine Carlson who has come to West Germany to see her army officer fiance Mike (William Ostrander, CHRISTINE). One night after an argument with Mike, she goes for a walk and accidentally witnesses the abduction of Hedda (Sue Kiel, REPO MAN), who had escaped from East Germany with sensitive information. Christine is abducted as well and they are taken to an East German prison run by warden Einbeck (Elizabeth Volkmann, VERONIKA VOSS). Suspected of being a CIA spy, Christine confesses under extreme duress and is sentenced to three years. Einbeck says she will make things easy on Christine if she gets information from Hedda, and she relies on her sadistic inmate lover Sofia (Sylvia Kristel, EMMANUELLE) to make sure Christine does her bidding. Christine is repeatedly raped and brutalized when she does not comply. When a sensitive prisoner hangs herself after being tormented by Sofia, Christine transformed from frightened to angry and becomes the new prison badass. While Sofia plots to kill Christine, Mike and Hedda's fugitive brother plot with army buddies to bust the two women out. RED HEAT did not repeat the success of CHAINED HEAT. It is a grimmer and less campy film with a miscast Kristel and a miserable-looking Blair. Tangerine Dream's score is not one of their better works, and seems to be more of an attempt to ape Joseph Conlon's score for the previous film. The climactic prison break/gun fight is a bunch of running through corridors and the deaths of a couple supporting cast inmates lack resonance. Producer Ernst R. von Theumer (who also produced CHAINED HEAT) reportedly co-directed the film. Strangely enough, the film is presented by Arnold Kopelson (producer of PLATOON and SE7EN).

Comments

RED HEAT shares disc 2 with JUNGLE WARRIORS. The progressive, anamorphic transfer of RED HEAT is the least impressive-looking transfer of the set. This is partly due to the sometimes overly dark and sometimes flatly-lit cinematography and the muted mise-en-scene, but the materials may also have been lacking (the film's title card seems to come from the German version, although the rest of the credits are in English).

The mono audio is in good condition. This is also reportedly the R-rated cut of the film (the BBFC states that the film was submitted at just under 104 minutes [at 24 fps], which agrees with other references). The Anchor Bay UK disc just under 90 minutes at PAL speed (although the cut 1985 British videotape ran 101 minutes). The film's theatrical trailer is the only related extra. As with CHAINED HEAT and RED HEAT, there is the option to watch it with a one minute Mr. Skin intro.

(aka "Euer Weg führt durch die Hölle" or "Jungle Fever")

directed by Ernst R. von Theumer
Mexico/West Germany 1984

Art director Larry (Marjoe Gortner, THE FOOD OF THE GODS) and photographer Joanna (Nina Van Pallandt, THE SWORD AND THE SORCERER) lead five American models into the jungle for a photo shoot. Against the advice of pilot Ben (Kai Wulff, ASSASSINS), they attempt to land at a picturesque waterfall and are shot down and captured by drug lord Santiago (Paul Smith, PIECES) and his sadistic sister Angel (Sybil Danning, BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS). Meanwhile, American drug lord Mastranga (John Vernon, ANIMAL HOUSE) and his chief Spilotro (Alex Cord, THE DEAD ARE ALIVE) have arrived to trade some gold for cocaine, but Santiago plans to double-cross them. Joanna and the models bust free of Santiago's dungeon and take up machine guns to bust out of his isolated temple lair. Woody Strode (ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST) plays Santiago's chief henchman and Dana Elcar (2010) plays a drug enforcement agent. With Danning, Smith, Vernon, Strode, Cord, and Gortner, JUNGLE WARRIORS should have been a fun film, but it hits all the wrong notes (speaking of notes, dig that god-awful theme song by Marina Arcangeli). Direction of JUNGLE WARRIORS was started by Billy Fine (who produced CHAINED HEAT) but he was replaced by Ernst R. von Theumer, and the results are cheesy rather than campy. Dennis Hopper (prior to his second wind of fame with SPEED) was originally cast in the Gortner role, but he was reportedly on drugs and was arrested early in the production. Smith isn't a particularly menacing drug lord and the extent of Danning's sadism is roughly fondling one of the models (she is on the receiving end of a nude oil massage from her brother, but this is mostly in silhouette) and she only gets to wield a machine gun very briefly. Vernon seems like he's just enjoying a south-of-the-border vacation while Cord barely registers at all. Gortner takes his role seriously, but is killed off early (one wonders if this was the fate of his character when Hopper was in the role) and Strode has little to do or say.

Comments

JUNGLE WARRIORS shares disc 2 with RED HEAT and is the progressive, anamorphic transfer is the softest-looking in the set, but this has more to do with the gauzy cinematography.

The mono audio is fine. The theatrical trailer is the only extra. As with the other two films, there is the option to watch the film with a Mr. Skin intro.
