(aka The Lady in Red Kills Seven Times, La dama rossa uccide sette volte, Red Queen Kills 7 Times, The Red Queen Kills 7 Times )
directed by Emilio Miraglia
Italy 1972
The noble Wildenbrück family is plagued by a curse that dates back centuries. Long ago, two sisters (the Red Queen & the Black Queen) despised each other with a passion-filled hate. In anger, one dark day the Black Queen murdered her sis, and so it would seem their deep enmity would finally be laid to rest. But legend has it the Red Queen returns every 100 years to take her revenge...by killing 7 people in and around the family. Flash to the present: fashion photographer Kitty Wildenbrück (Bouchet) is untroubled by the ancient myths of her family. That is, until people around her begin to die at the hands of a mysterious red-cloaked, knife-wielding ripper! |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc. ADDITION Arrow Region FREE Blu-ray - May 2016: As with Arrow's Blu-ray of The Night Evelyn Came out of the Grave (also included in this Killer Dames: Two Gothic Chillers by Emilio P. Miraglia double Blu-ray package) this dual-layered transfer with a max'ed out bitrate is a substantial improvement over the 2006 SD. It shows more information in the frame and tightens up in every respect with more, and consistent, grain texture. It's darker making the DVD looked boosted and colors seem more authentic and realistic. Both are advertised as "Brand new 2K restorations of the films from the original camera negatives" and this particular package is limited to 3000 copies and comes with a limited Edition 60-page booklet containing new writing by James Blackford, Kat Ellinger, Leonard Jacobs and Rachael Nisbet. Both the English-language and Italian-language versions are available - seamlessly-branched and with slightly different subtitle translations (meaning the Italian is not simply using DUB-titles.) Audio goes the linear DTS-HD Master (1.0 channel mono, 24-bit) for both films and both language options. There may be a slight sync issue in dialogue that I would say is only noticeable - not distracting. The score for both films is by Bruno Nicolai (Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key, Face to Face, The Perverse Countess, Torso, Ten Little Indians, Pasolini's Hawks and the Sparrows) which, as typical of his work with Giallos and spaghetti westerns suffers marginally from a weak higher-end. It actually adds some nice flavor to the film. The package is region free and purchasable on both sides of the Atlantic. The Red Queen Kills Seven Times Blu-ray offers a new, and excellent, audio commentary by Alan Jones and Kim Newman. For these Giallos these commentaries are one of the highlights of the packages for me... love the intelligent analysis and discussion. There is a brief archival intro to the film by by production/costume designer Lorenzo Baraldi, plus an exclusive new, 20-minute, interview with Sybil Danning (everyone curious as to her looks - they are still there), a new, revealing 14-minutes interview with critic Stephen Thrower and there are four archival video pieces; Dead à Porter is a 14-minute interview with Lorenzo Baraldi, Rounding Up the Usual Suspects spends 18-minutes with actor Marino Masé, If I Met Emilio Miraglia Today is a short featurette with Erika Blanc, Lorenzo Baraldi and Marino Masé and, lastly, My Favourite Films is an archival interview with actress Barbara Bouchet. There is an alternative opening and trailers in both Italian and English. The package has a reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Gilles Vranckx. Killer Dames: Two Gothic Chillers by Emilio P. Miraglia is easily a must-own Giallo Blu-ray package for fans. These are rich and deep in the genre and the films charisma will have you embracing the tension with white knuckles. Our highest recommendation! -Gary Tooze and Eric Cotenas |
