Directed by Eddie Romero
Philippines / United States 1974

Meet the Savage Sisters—three of the world’s deadliest women. Gloria Hendry (Black Belt Jones) is the Colonel, lean, mean and foxy, with plenty of ammunition stacked in just the right places. Cheri Caffaro (Too Hot to Handle) is the Field Marshall, who took command of the Liberation Army to save her men. Rosanna Ortiz (Savage!) is the Brigadier General, top mama of a female commando unit. They’re trouble multiplied by three—and they’ve got plans for a spectacular jailbreak, a million-dollar robbery and an island revolution. This rip-roaring, action-packed adventure from Filipino filmmaking legend Eddie Romero (Black Mama White Mama) co-stars John Ashley (Hell on Wheels), Vic Díaz (Hustler Squad) and the great Sid Haig (Busting).

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (June 2022): Kino have transferred Eddie Romero's Savage Sisters to Blu-ray. It's on a single layered disc with a high bitrate. I saw some banding a couple of times but otherwise it looked quite pleasing with bright colors and depth. There are inconsistencies that reflect more on the production than this 1080P transfer. It's fairly clean - a few speckles - with no graphic damage. The overall image is pretty decent - better than I might have anticipated.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (16-bit) in the original English language. Savage Sisters has plenty of loud aggressive sequences with extensive gunfire, an explosion and scream from torture. It exports some formidable audio impact. The score is credited to "Bax" who is Les Baxter (A Life at Stake, Master of the World, How To Stuff a Wild Bikini, Switchblade Sisters, The Man With the X-Ray EyesThe Comedy of Terrors, Panic in the Year Zero, US version of Baron Blood, The Beast Within) sounding occasionally dramatic if unremarkable. Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers a new commentary by Horror-Fix's James G. Chandler and Ash Hamilton. They talk the political climate in The Philippines in the early 70's, why many film productions were made there, about how Savage Sisters was a departure from the Women in Prison genre, the less-substantiated "R" rating except from some S+M referencing, the film's choreography in the violent sequences. They talk about the cast; Gloria Hendry, Cheri Caffaro, Rosanna Ortiz, Sid Haig etc. It is interspersed with a healthy amount of sarcasm - having a few laughs. I usually don't appreciate that but they can be reasonably witty. It's a decent commentary - hard to accomplish for this genre. There is also a trailer for the film. There is a reversible sleeve (see below) and O-card slipcase.

Eddie Romero's Savage Sisters is about what you might expect for a mid-70s exploitation throw-away. Our three titular ladies are very pretty - the 1080P image exemplifies that. There is almost no nudity but plenty of deviant sexual references, gratuitous killing and corrupted characters. "Savage Sisters" was the last and most expensive of many films that actor/producer John Ashley shot in the Philippines. Essentially, in a revolution-torn country factions wrestle over stolen funds - all eventually overpowered by our protagonist gals. There is a seventies Grindhouse vibe (characters like 'One-Eye', 'Pegleg') but with its own low-budget enticement. It seems kinda cute now and a bit laughable with forthright female domination surfacing intermittently; "I'd almost let all of you pee in my face just to see where it came from". The Kino Blu-ray has the HD a/v and a commentary for those who require more encouragement. For some it might be worthwhile just for the three female stars or Sid Haig's involvement. Enjoy!
