(aka "The Evil Protege" or "Thrilled to Death" or "Night Warning" or "Mrs. Lynch" or "Momma's Boy" or "Nightmare Maker")

Directed by William Asher
USA 1981

Terror begins when a night of murder and bloodshed leads bigoted police detective Joe Carlson (Bo Svenson, Walking Tall Part 2, Choke Canyon, Breaking Point) to try to frame orphaned high school basketball player Billy Lynch (Jimmy McNichol, Escape From El Diablo). However, Billy’s aunt Cheryl (Susan Tyrrell, Fat City, Forbidden Zone) is the real knife-wielding culprit, and with Billy about to graduate, her twisted urge to keep him all to herself is about to erupt in a wave of carnage. No one is safe when an unstable lawman and a psychotic aunt converge in a shocking climax you’ll never forget! Julia Duffy (TV’s Newhart) and Bill Paxton (Aliens, Mortuary) co-star in this cult shocker directed by TV great William Asher (Johnny Cool).

***

Rejected by her lover, the only man left in Cheryl's life is the orphaned nephew she has raised as her own son. She'll stop at nothing to keep Billy with her. When her plans misfire, she is swept up into an insane frenzy that means death to anyone who comes between her and her obsession. But the investigating detective is convinced that Billy is the real killer - and determined to prove it. Madness and fanaticism work together to drag all concerned into a terrifying vortex of blood-letting that adds a nightmarish twist to the classic Oedipus story.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Code Red Blu-ray (July 2021): Code Red, via Kino, have transferred William Asher's Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "2017 2K Scan from the Original Camera Negative". It came out in 2017 on Blu-ray and is out-of-print HERE. This seems likely to be the same transfer although we cannot verify that. It is in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio and is on a single-layered disc. The image is very clean and bright. There is plenty of depth notable in the outdoor sequences. It looks quite good in 1080P with manipulation  or egregious damage.

NOTE: We have added 54 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Code Red use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the original English language. Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker has many aggressive moments, blood-curdling screams, gunfire, fights and more that come through with surprising depth in the robust audio transfer. There is a score by Bruce Langhorne (The Hired Hand, Fighting Mad, Melvin and Howard), adding to the suspense. Code Red offer no subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Code Red Blu-ray offers two commentaries. The first is by producer/writer Steven Breimer and co-writer Alan Jay Glueckman, moderated by Nathaniel Thompson. It has anecdotes on production including working with director Asher and much more. The second is by Jimmy McNichol, brother of Kristy. It has two moderators (Jeff McKay?) It's scattered and off-the-cuff, with a lot of Jimmy's career, Duffy (10 years older than Jimmy), spotting Bill Paxton etc.. There are also video interviews with McNichol and Susan Tyrrell, actor Steven Eastin, make-up artist Allan A. Alpone and producer Steve Breimer for over 1/2 hour in total. There is a theatrical trailer and the package has a reversible alt-title "Night Warning" (see below) art and is in a limited edition O-Card slipcase.

William Asher's Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker is  quite a turn from his How to Stuff and Wild Bikini and Beach Blanket Bingo films plus Bewitched and I Love Lucy episodes. The film is sex infused with an obvious incestuous desire by Aunt Tyrrell for her nephew and the police suspicion that Billy is gay (and the potential murderer of the handy-man over a love tryst) justifying the grilling and spying of girlfriend Julia Duffy. Yes, it is quite unusual and has some intense violence and gore including the jarred severed-head of aunt Cheryl's old flame. Tyrrell's acting is kitschy as it is so obscenely over-the-top, supporting the fact that her character is insane. The Code Red Blu-ray is for a niche who can appreciate Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker for many reasons including nostalgia. It's 40-years old now and is certainly unique with the shocking intensity rarely foreshadowed. Tyrrell's acting is something to behold. Her bio describes her as "A bizarre, gloriously one-of-a-kind Hollywood gypsy and self-affirmed outcast." I can see her work having a cult-following. This is an odd genre film but an appealing package.
