(aka TV title "Wanda" or "Odeon")

Directed by Albert Pyun
USA 1988

Wanda's famed archeologist father has been missing for years. Out of the blue, she receives an unexpected letter from her father's colleague in Africa informing her that his disappearance is due to his presumed death after falling down a bottomless pit. Deciding to make the transcontinental journey in the hope of finding him alive, Wanda flies to Africa only to end up stumbling down the same pit as her father. Once at the bottom of the hole, she discovers that it's the gateway to a lost subterranean civilization - Atlantis! Unfortunately, the Atlanteans don't take too kindly to visitors from the Earth's surface...

An intentionally absurd late 80s cable TV mainstay from Cannon Films, helmed by beloved cult filmmaker, Albert Pyun (Radioactive Dreams, Dollman), ALIEN FROM L.A. stars actress and model, Kathy Ireland (The Player) in her breakout role, along with William R. Moses (TV's JAG) and Linda Kerridge (Fade to Black).

***

When her archaeologist father disappears on an expedition, Wanda sets out to look for him. What she finds is a secret underground world, where no one believes in life on the surface and where she and her father are taken for spies.

ADDITION: Vinegar Syndrome Blu-ray (July 2021):  Vinegar Syndrome have released a new Blu-ray of the Cannon Films' cult classic "Alien From L.A." from director Albert Pyun. The single layer Blu-ray disc sports a rather high bitrate throughout the hour-and-a-half feature. The film has been newly scanned and restored in 2K from its 35mm interpositive, with the transfer showcasing a strong level of crisp detail. There is also some thick grain adding a filmic texture to the presentation. There are the occasional, frame specific, moments of small dark blips, without any longer, more substantial scratches to be found. The 2K interpositive scan features strong detail in brighter and motionless camera sequences, with the darker and more kinetic moments looking a tad blotchy and undefined. Vinegar Syndrome has long been performing impressive transfers and restorations, and this is no exception.

Vinegar Syndrome's Blu-ray release of "Alien From L.A." contains a 24-bit 2.0 DTS-HD Master audio track. The film's various sci-fi & fantasy noises sound appropriately full and 3-dimensional, for a 2.0 stereo track. Dialogue is clear and audible, with the film's music and effects not falling to the wayside. "Alien From L.A."'s music is thanks to Jim Andron, Steve LeGassick, Tony Riparetti, and James Saad. There are optional English SDH subtitles on this Region 'A' Blu-ray from Vinegar Syndrome.

Vinegar Syndrome's Blu-ray release of "Alien From L.A." features three interviews; the first being a 14-minute interview with writer/director Albert Pyun discussing the various bizarre circumstances that led to the finished product, the next being an 11-minute interview with actor Thom Mathews detailing his work on the film and his subsequent cult celebrity status, the final interview being a 3.5-minute audio-only interview with actress Lina Kerridge explaining her time making "Alien From L.A." These three interviews are the only extras on Vinegar Syndrome's Blu-ray.

Vinegar Syndrome's 2K scan (from the 35mm interpositive) Blu-ray of "Alien From L.A." will surely please many fans of this cult film. The strong 1080p HD visual transfer makes this an easy upgrade over any previous SD releases. While the extras are on the lighter side, I quite enjoyed the few brief interviews included. Vinegar Syndrome continue their delightfully eclectic mandate of "specializing in the masterful restoration and distribution of cult, horror, and erotic films from the 1960s-90s". Recommended to fans of Albert Pyun schlock or supermodel Kathy Ireland.
