ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): A Criterion Antonioni will almost always take precedence and this week we compared their La Notte Blu-ray to the Masters of Cinema version. An essential no matter which region you reside. we spent a lot of time this week comparing discs in the new The Bruce Lee Legacy Collection Blu-ray by Shout! Factory. The new US package overwhelms. Early for a Christmas favorite but The Bishop's Wife brings the festive season closer with Warner's new Blu-ray. A winner. Richard Linklater's Before Midnight maintains the same wonderful appeal of the previous two films and offers a brilliant Blu-ray image. Slap Shot with Paul Newman never seems to lose its comedic edge. A fabulously fun Blu-ray edition. Mike Newell's The Man in the Iron Mask has all the appeal of Dumas adventure story. Hanging For Django has all the pasta-western conventions but the a/v transfer is not up-to-snuff. Eric covered 4 DVDs this week; Paradise: Faith - the highly lauded second film in Ulrich Seidl's "Paradise" trilogy. Turtle Hill, Brooklyn is an excellent comedy about the human condition. Branca's Pitch a documentary that recounts the life of the Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Ralph Branca. 4 Dead Girls is yet another sleazy horror. Have a great week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The Bishop's Wife BD - Heavenly bells are ringing, jubilant choirs are singing, and Christmas joy is blanketing the world like freshly fallen snow. But the Yuletide spirit has yet to warm Bishop Henry Brougham's Victorian home. Struggling to raise funds for a new cathedral, the preoccupied young clergyman has neglected his loving wife, Julia, and now only divine intervention can save their marriage! But the powerful and handsome angel sent from above has a mind of his own and teaching mortal Henry an immortal lesson in romance isn't all he has planned! Starring Oscarr winners Cary Grant, Loretta Young and David Niven*, and featuring a stellar supporting cast" (The Hollywood Reporter), which includes James Gleason and Monty Woolley, this delightful romantic comedy is wondrous, witty and truly divine! Blu-ray Release date: November 5th, 2013

Before Midnight BD - Every nine years, they get together to talk about love, and their conversation is unique in the annals of film. Unique, because this is an ongoing fiction so well-crafted by its principals, director Richard Linklater plus actors Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke all collaborating on the script, that it plays like documented fact, a kind of 7 Up primer on life’s romantic vicissitudes. From their chance encounter in Vienna (Before Sunrise) to their reconnection in Paris (Before Sunset) to their sojourn here, we meet the couple, Celine and Jesse, infrequently but at points of peak intensity, and those isolated moments form a continuum that seems palpably real – like us, they have aged and compromised and lost big battles that now look trivial and won victories that could prove Pyrrhic. For them too, time has spoken, and only time will tell. Blu-ray Release date: October 22nd, 2013

Slap Shot BD - Paul Newman plays Reggie Dunlop, the coach of a pathetic minor-league American hockey team. His career at a standstill and his marriage in tatters, Dunlop has nothing to lose by taking on a new group of players who are one evolutionary step above Neanderthals. Only when the team begins winning does he decide to get behind these players, and to encourage the rest of the team to play as down-and-dirty as the newcomers. Straight-arrow team member Ned Braden (Michael Ontkean) resents this influx of gonzo talent, preferring to play clean. As the film's multitude of subplots play themselves out, Dunlop does his best to keep the outraged Braden on the team. Slap Shot is the sort of film for which the "R" rating was invented: Its nonstop barrage of profanity and its raunchy action sequences are of such intensity that the film will probably never be shown intact on commercial television. Blu-ray Release date: October 15th, 2013

The Man in the Iron Mask BD - Alexandre Dumas' classic tale of good and evil twins is brought lavishly to the screen by director Mike Newell (Donnie Brasco). Richard Chamberlain shines in dual roles as both the imprisoned man in the hideous iron mask and his foppish twin, King Louis XIV of France. Under the sinister influence of Minister of Finance Fouquet, Louis rules with wasteful opulence. His brother Philippe, the rightful heir, lives in obscurity with no knowledge of his birthright. But the Captain of the Musketeers, D'Artagnan, has plans to restore the declining fortunes of the throne by secretly substituting Philippe for the King. Blu-ray Release date: October 6th, 2013

Hanging For Django BD - In this classic spaghetti western from Sergio Garrone (Django the Bastard, Three Crosses Not To Die) making its home video debut, an evangelical bounty hunter teams up with another to bring an outlaw gang that has been sneaking illegal immigrants over the border to sell as slaves to justice. Blu-ray Release date: October 6th, 2013

La Notte BD - Michelangelo Antonioni's 1961 follow-up to L'avventura--and the middle feature in a loose trilogy ending with Eclipse--repeats many of the melancholic themes and stylistic moves of its predecessor, with particular emphasis on the boredom and atrophied emotions of the rich. The results are somewhat more mixed, though on the whole the performances are better--which may not matter so much in an Antonioni context. The minimal plot, restricted to less than 24 hours, involves the death of passion between a successful novelist (Marcello Mastroianni) and his frustrated wife (Jeanne Moreau). Criterion Blu-ray Release Date: October 29th, 2013

The Bruce Lee Legacy Collection BD - We've compared the 4 feature films of the set (The Big Boss, Fist of Fury, The Way of the Dragon and Game of Death) with alternate Asian versions. Also included are two documentaries Bruce Lee: The Legend (and the original version Bruce Lee: The Man, The Legend) and I Am Bruce Lee plus a bonus disc with over two hours of bonus content exclusive to this set. Blu-ray Release Date: October 22nd, 2013

Turtle Hill, Brooklyn - Will's (writer Brian W. Seibert) thirtieth birthday celebration starts off with a bang when his boyfriend Mateo (producer Ricardo Valdez) discovers that Will's family does not know he's gay (thanks to a drop in appearance by his intolerant sister). The party setup takes on a frosty tone felt by the arrival of the first guests, but Will's own lack of communication in the relationship is not the only problem. Mateo has secrets of his own, and they show up in the form of a very forward acquaintance. Throughout the night, Will realizes that his friends are his family as well as the value of speaking out both publicly (in a showy - since the actor also wrote it - but amusing argument with a Log Cabin Republican) and privately in his own relationships with his boyfriend and his sister. DVD Release Date: September 24th, 2013

Paradise: Faith - In this second installment, Ulrich Seidl explores what it means to carry the cross. For Anna Maria, a single woman in her fifties (and sister of PARADISE: LOVE's Teresa), paradise lies with Jesus. She devotes her summer vacation to doing missionary work, so that Austria may be brought back to the path of virtue. On her daily pilgrimage through Vienna, she goes from door to door, carrying a foot-high statue of the Virgin Mary. When her husband, an Egyptian Muslim confined to a wheelchair, comes home after years of absence, her life is turned upside down. FAITH recounts the stations of the cross of a marriage and the longing for love. DVD Release Date: October 22nd, 2013

Branca's Pitch - On October 3, 1951 Ralph Branca became a legendary figure in baseball history. The 26 year-old Brooklyn Dodger pitcher became infamous for losing the National League Pennant to the bitter rival New York Giants, by giving up the game winning homerun termed The Shot Heard Round the World. Jeered by once adoring fans and labeled a scapegoat for the rest of his life, Ralph never reclaimed his career. From Executive Producer Bobby Valentine, BRANCA'S PITCH follows 86 year-old Ralph Branca's journey to pen a memoir that finally tells his side of the story, to try and restore his fascinating, yet overlooked legacy in baseball's Golden Age of the '40s and '50s. The documentary features a mixture of verité, and archival materials including many of Branca's own films and photos such as a recently discovered and restored color 16mm film of the 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field. DVD Release Date: October 1st, 2013

4 Dead Girls - The Soul Taker - A quartet of college students - dainty "final girl" Lily (Katherine Browning), her sister Lori (Ashley Love) and her vitriolic lover Pam (Leah Verrill), and slutty Bianca (Tiffany S. Walker) - find a house that's too good to be true. Three bedrooms, fully furnished (including a prominently-featured Dynex flatscreen), with a state-of-the-art security system, and it's only fifteen-hundred-dollars a month. The one major drawback is their landlord Devlin (co-director Mike Campbell): not only is he a creep who spies on them through the house's security system, he's also a "soul taker" who feasts on the souls of evil women. Soon enough the women are trapped in the house and - in a change from the usual stalk-n-slash - being played against each other one another to see who survives with their lives and their virtues.
