(aka "The Rental" )

directed by Mike Campbell, Todd Johnson
USA 2012

A quartet of college students - dainty "final girl" Lily (Katherine Browning), her sister Lori (Ashley Love) and her vitriolic lover Pam (Leah Verrill), and slutty Bianca (Tiffany S. Walker) - find a house that's too good to be true. Three bedrooms, fully furnished (including a prominently-featured Dynex flatscreen), with a state-of-the-art security system, and it's only fifteen-hundred-dollars a month. The one major drawback is their landlord Devlin (co-director Mike Campbell): not only is he a creep who spies on them through the house's security system, he's also a "soul taker" who feasts on the souls of evil women. Soon enough the women are trapped in the house and - in a change from the usual stalk-n-slash - being played against each other one another to see who survives with their lives and their virtues.

Comments

Breaking Glass' dual-layer disc features a progressive, anamorphic transfer - oddly framed at 1.96:1 - of this Red One-photographed feature. The heavy digital color grading makes it difficult to tell how detailed the original image was, but the image are more about mood than anything else.

The behind-the-scenes featurette is a series of talking head (Love mentions that she played the film straight and did see the film's comic aspects until she saw the finished film) with a few on-set bits on display including an unused take (not a blooper since the actress does not break character even though a prop isn't working). The other featurettes are less informative. The special effects featurette does not offer any insight into their creation, it's merely a seven minute condensation of all of the shots containing effects. The deleted scenes run eighteen minutes, although the extra bits - sometimes just additional bits of dialogue - are show in context. A trailer for the film and other Breaking Glass releases rounds out the extras.
