ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): This week we dipped our toes into Criterion's Thirty-Two Blu-ray Special Edition 100 Years of Olympic Films by covering Kon Ichikawa's Tokyo Olympiad on 4K-restored Blu-ray, Leni Riefenstahl's Olympia (1938) also on 4K-restored Blu-ray, the incredibly restored The Games of the V Olympiad Stockholm, 1912 looking incredible in 1080P and Visions of Eight - with shorts on the 1972 Munich Olympics by Milos Forman, Claude Lelouch, Arthur Penn, John Schlesinger, Mai Zetterling and others. It's looking like a brilliant package and we will continue to cover each Blu-ray in the set. I enjoyed Roman Polanski's Knife in the Water on Screenbound Blu-ray this past week. Pleasing HD video, uncompressed audio, great extras - still a great film. Vampir Cuadecuc - is photographed on high contrast black & white film stock, which gives it the appearance of a degraded film print, avant-garde yet evoking early Expressionist horror films - and now on Region FREE Blu-ray from Second Run. A Quiet Place in the Country is a fever-dream of an artist's (Franco Nero) decent into madness. It get a Blu-ray release with new commentary from Shout! Factory. Cate Shortland's Berlin Syndrome is an Artificial Eye Blu-ray - a fascinating Australian horror-psychodrama thriller with emotional manipulation and perversity themes running deep. StageFright is a EuroHorror that has made it to Blu-ray and fits into the Giallo genre - a solid slasher flic with plenty of style, tension and suspense. Neighbors (1981) is a highly interesting black comedy with John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd but the Sony Blu-ray is an overpriced dud. Just pass. Unfortunately, Elephant Films (or someone) has seen fit to alter the original music of the 1932 Pre-code Murders in the Rue Morgue - the Blu-ray looks amazing but we'd like the original audio as an option, please. The Bees is so bad, it's, almost good, - another modern nature-attacks creature-feature that has made it to Blu-ray. The Ambassador has Robert Mitchum, Rock Hudson (his last film!), Ellen Burstyn, and Donald Pleasence but I felt it was pretty contrived exporting a ham-fisted political agenda, although I appreciate the inclusion of a commentary on the Blu-ray. On DVD Eric reviewed the highly lauded Like Crazy about two females who escape from a psychiatric facility in Tuscany. The Basement is a low-rated Hungarian horror. I covered a couple of Gialli that haven't made it to Blu-ray yet - The Black Belly of the Tarantula is a desirable and frightening horror-thriller from 1972, and The Fifth Cord is a A beautifully crafted, nuanced Italian crime thriller from 1971. Sold! Slightly Scarlet is a highly enticing Film Noir but the new Screenbound DVD has too many deficiencies. Cave In! has the standard formula for the disaster popcorn'er and fills a need for those you enjoy this genre.

“The road to a friend's house is never long. .”.

Have a great week!!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

StageFright BD - While a group of young actors rehearse a new musical about a mass murderer, a notorious psychopath escapes from a nearby insane asylum. But when the show's director locks his cast in the theater overnight, the madman is accidentally locked inside as well. Now, a killer with acting in his blood has gone berserk for the blood of actors (including several scenes that EuroHorror fans worldwide consider to be the most violent of the decade) and the stage is set for one unforgettable evening of shock, suspense and unstoppable carnage. Blu-ray Release date: September 23rd, 2014

The Games of the V Olympiad Stockholm, 1912 BD - Newly restored and assembled by the International Olympic Committee, The Games of the V Olympiad Stockholm, 1912 (Stockholm 1912) is the earliest comprehensive moving-image record of the modern Olympic Games that survives today. Blu-ray Release date: December 5th, 2017

Neighbors (1981) BD - Thomas Berger's darkly funny novel ''Neighbors'' certainly wasn't tailor-made for John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, but casting them in the film version was a good idea. Mr. Belushi makes a stolid and suspicious Earl Keese, a man whose life becomes a shambles when the wrong people move next door. And Mr. Aykroyd is a suitably menacing choice for Vic (called Harry in the novel), the brassy new neighbor who, for no reason that is ever explained, does everything in his power to drive Earl wild. Blu-ray Release date: November 1st, 2016

Olympia (1938) BD - Olympia is a 1938 German documentary film written, directed and produced by Leni Riefenstahl, documenting the 1936 Summer Olympics, held in the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, Germany. The film was released in two parts: Olympia 1. Teil — Fest der Völker (Festival of Nations) and Olympia 2. Teil — Fest der Schönheit (Festival of Beauty). It was the first documentary feature film of the Olympic Games ever made. Many advanced motion picture techniques, which later became industry standards but which were groundbreaking at the time, were employed —including unusual camera angles, smash cuts, extreme close-ups, placing tracking shot rails within the bleachers, and the like. The techniques employed are almost universally admired, but the film is controversial due to its political context. Nevertheless, the film appears on many lists of the greatest films of all time, including Time magazine's "All-Time 100 Movies." Blu-ray Release date: December 5th, 2017

Vampir Cuadecuc BD - The film creates a ravishing netherworld that seems to exist in neither the 19th century nor the 20th but in a unique zone oscillating between these eras, just as it seems to occupy a realm of its own that is neither fiction nor non-fiction... But above all is an all-embracing sensual pleasure and humour overriding centuries, generic categories, and conventions. Blu-ray Release date: October 9th, 2017

Visions of Eight BD - A documentary about the 1972 Munich Olympics from eight of the world's most accomplished directors capture what the naked eye cannot see. All the pain - the joy - the triumph - and especially the struggle to reach the pinnacle in mankind's most exacting competition. The eight segments are directed by eight different directors – Milos Forman, Kon Ichikawa, Claude Lelouch, Arthur Penn, John Schlesinger, Mai Zetterling, Juri Ozerov, Michael Pfleghar. Music by Henry Mancini. Winner of the 1974 Golden Globe for Best Documentary. Blu-ray Release date: December 5th, 2017

A Quiet Place in the Country BD - A prominent painter Leonardo (Franco Nero) is plagued by nightmares that include himself and his lover/press agent Flavia (Vanessa Redgrave). His agent is convinced that he just needs some rest. So, he rents a villa in the countryside. Between creating a new painting and trying to fix up the dilapidated cottage, Leonardo’s nightmares continue but … they are now getting worse. Will the nightmares continue and take the artist into a downward spiral into madness? Blu-ray Release Date: September 26th, 2017

Tokyo Olympiad BD - A spectacle of magnificent proportions, Kon Ichikawa’s Tokyo Olympiad ranks among the greatest documents of sport ever committed to film. Utilizing glorious widescreen cinematography, Ichikawa examines the beauty and rich drama on display at the 1964 Summer Games in Tokyo, creating a catalogue of extraordinary observations that range from the expansive to the intimate. The glory, despair, passion, and suffering of Olympic competition are rendered with lyricism and technical mastery, culminating in an inspiring testament to the beauty of the human body and the strength of the human spirit. Blu-ray Release date: December 5th, 2017

The Bees BD - Evil corporations have smuggled a deadly strain of South American killer bees into the United States and now the entire world may be on the brink of imminent destruction! As cities tumble, body counts rise, and mass hysteria ensues, scientist John Norman (John Saxon) thinks he might have discovered the secret strategy to stop THE BEES! Blu-ray Release date: Release date: February 23rd, 2016

Murders in the Rue Morgue BD - In 1845 Paris, mysterious Dr. Mirakle (Bela Lugosi) demonstrates his theories on evolution using his ape, Erik, at a carnival visited by medical student Pierre Dupin (Leon Waycoff) and his girlfriend, Camille Espanaye (Sidney Fox). Unknown to his audience, Mirakle performs experiments in his secret laboratory that involve mixing human blood with that of Erik's. After three prostitutes are found dead from being injected with a strange substance, Pierre is alarmed when Camille goes missing. Blu-ray Release date: January 25th, 2017

The Ambassador BD - The American ambassador to Israel (Mitchum) is placed in a compromising position when his wife (Burstyn) is filmed in flagrante delicto with a PLO leader (Testi). Resisting attempts at blackmail, Mitchum instead uses his wife's lover's influence to set up a meeting between Palestinian and Israeli students. But the success of Mitchum's personal peace initiative is threatened by the fanatical terrorist faction SEIKA, who are determined to frustrate all attempts to negotiate a peaceful settlement. Blu-ray Release date: October 3rd, 2017

Berlin Syndrome BD - Australian thriller directed by Cate Shortland. While backpacking around Germany, Australian photojournalist Clare (Teresa Palmer) finds herself wandering the streets of Berlin looking for adventure when she meets local English teacher Andi (Max Riemelt). A passionate, whirlwind romance ensues between the pair but Clare begins to wonder what she's let herself in for when she awakens one morning to find herself imprisoned in Andi's apartment. With Andi transformed from the charming man she first met Clare fears for her life as she clings to the hope of escaping, however, as she is still dependent on him for survival, the pair's bond continues to grow in unexpected ways... Blu-ray Release date: October 2nd, 2017

Knife in the Water BD - When Andrzej (Niemczyk), a successful sportswriter on holiday with his wife, Christine (Umecka), picks up a hitchhiker (Malanowicz), the couple asks the young man (nameless throughout) to join them on a short boating excursion. Jealous of the blonde boy's youth and looks, Andrzej boasts of his physical prowess, faulting his guest's inexperience at sea. Tension between the men intensifies, with the pocket knife that represents the hitchhiker's particular skills lending a continual suggestion of violence and sexuality to the goings-on. Things eventually do get violent. Blu-ray Release Date: March 24th, 2017

Cave In! - A handful of citizens (travelers, government officials, a park ranger) are trapped after the sudden collapse of the popular Five Mile Caverns. Also with them is a desperate fugitive eager to claim a hostage after the group works its way to daylight. DVD Release Date: July 7th, 2010

Like Crazy - Beatrice is a motor-mouthed fantasist, a self-styled billionaire countess who likes to believe she's on intimate terms with world leaders. Donatella is a tattooed introvert, a fragile young woman locked in her own mystery. They are both patients at the Villa Biondi, a progressive but secure psychiatric clinic. Paolo Virzì's new film tells the story of the unpredictable and moving friendship that develops between the two women as they flee the mental institution in search of love and happiness in the open-air nuthouse - the world of sane people. DVD Release Date: 5 September 5th, 2017

The Basement - After neighbor Mr. Kranicz (Richard Rifkin) calls the police to break up their raucous graduation party, building owner's son Tommy (Gergo Szekér), his British girlfriend Suzie (Caroline Boulton), drug dealer Kolos (Takács Zalán), and pals Woo-jin (Tom Nguyen), and Ayame (Sherin Bors) decide to conduct a seance. Strange noises and Suzie's cat lead the quintet to the building's basement which has been rented by a mysterious third party and is supposed to be locked off. DVD Release Date: September 5th, 2017

The Black Belly of the Tarantula - This frightening horror-thriller stars Giancarlo Giannini as Inspector Tellini, chasing a killer whose victims are paralyzed with a poisoned acupuncture needle, forcing them to watch helplessly as their stomachs are ripped open with a sharp knife. This method duplicates the habits of the black wasp in slaying tarantulas, explaining the title. Much of the film is spent on a wild goose chase involving Silvano Tranquilli, the husband of the first victim (Barbara Bouchet). DVD Release Date: August 4th, 2015

The Fifth Cord - Luigi Bazzoni (Le Orme) directed this outstanding Giallo thriller starring Franco Nero as a hard-drinking newspaperman who gets involved in a string of brutal murders. After he investigates the first, he becomes a suspect himself but eventually manages to unravel a complex plot involving blackmail, adultery, and private sex shows. DVD Release Date: March 28th, 2006

Slightly Scarlet - Based on a novel by James M Cain, this big-city corruption chronicle is a smart example of Dwan's '50s output, a film noir that just happens to be in colour and SuperScope. Gang leader Payne meeting his comeuppance when he tangles with sisters Fleming and Dahl, the former the mayor's innocent secretary, the latter a dangerous kleptomaniac. (Martin Scorsese, incidentally, has tipped his cap to Dwan and acknowledged him as an influence. Screenbound DVD Release Date: September 18th, 2017
