(aka "La pazza gioia" or "Folles de joie")

directed by Paolo Virzì
Italy/France 2016

From director Paolo Virzi (HUMAN CAPITAL) comes an alternately comic, tragic, and heartwarming story of two clinically-depressed people headed for a fall. The new girl at the Villa Biondini psychiatric facility for women is Donatella Morelli (Micaela Ramazzotti, THOSE HAPPY YEARS), in a leg brace after a suicide attempt and kidnapping her child. She is immediately befriended by Beatrice Morandini Valdirana (Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, SLACK BAY), a snobby socialite committed after an act of jealous rage in an incident involving her conman lover. Beatrice lays it on thick, needing someone to impress with her stories of high society that have worn on the other patients, and the hospital staff notice that the two seem to be good for each other even if they do not. Both assigned as volunteers to the city garden - Donatella for her work ethic and Beatrice for her specialized knowledge of herbs - the two take advantage of the lateness of the facility bus to hop another bus to the city to blow their pay at the mall. Although Donatella believes that they will eventually return to the hospital, Beatrice continues to delay the inevitable, finally dragging her along in flight when the hospital staff come looking for them. Stealing a car, the two take to the road, with Donatella wanting to find out about her son who was given up for adoption and Beatrice wanting to reconnect with her lover or her attorney husband. Both are surprised and shocked as the narratives they have built up for themselves are shattered by harsh reality, wearing down their resolve and only having each other for support in facing the consequences of their carefree actions. Anna Galiena (THE HAIRDRESSER'S HUSBAND) also stars.

Comments

Strand gives this Arri Alexa-photographed film a typically high-bitrate, dual-layer, progressive, anamorphic transfer and the image is most pleasing in close-ups while the their is a deliberate softness and color correction skewed towards the overly warm as fits the summer countryside setting of the villa or the cold and overly blue for the last third of the film. The Dolby Digital 5.1 track makes conservative use of the surrounds in general during the first part of the film, and more so in the second with the busier environments and the disorientation of the lead duo. Optional English subtitles are free of any glaring errors. The only extras are the film's trailer and trailers for four other titles.
