ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): A good and knowledgeable friend told me in the week about our Ben-Hur Blu-ray comparison that 'the caps on the BD version are the first examples of BD that impressed me'. It is an impeccable presentation and our #1 recommendation this week. But there is plenty more to enjoy. Although less technically-stellar I really enjoyed the two William Wellman westerns to region FREE Blu-ray our of Germany. The Ox-Bow Incident is a memorable classic but the lesser of the two Blu-rays while Yellow Sky can be more aggressively endorsed in HD. Victor Sjöström's The Phantom Carriage should appeal to more then silent-era fans - those who appreciate Ingmar Bergman will also get a lot out of the Criterion package. Olivier Assayas has made an impressive bio-pic in Carlos and the new Blu-ray handily advances over the older Canadian one. Criterion have also done their own digital magic with Harakiri in 1080P - it looks definitive and has some viable extras. Sergio Martino's Torso has made the bump to HD but there are some curious features to the image transfer. Pasolini's Salo needs no words - and the Criterion Blu-ray appears the most consistent. I liked Guillermo del Toro's Mimic in the new format - a modern creature feature with style to spare - and the price is right. On DVD we've compared Welles The Magnificent Ambersons - available in the Amazon Exclusive Citizen Kane Blu-ray package - to the previous, and very poor, European SD editions. It's the top a/v... but bare-bones. Eric has reviewed Atrocious this week - a modern horror-thriller with an edge. Have the best week of your life.

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Mimic BD - Children are dying in New York City. Dr Susan Tyler (Mira Sorvino) and Dr Peter Mann (Jeremy Northam) are concerned, baffled and on the case. As scientists, they approach the epidemic from different perspectives and discover not a rodent connection, but a cockroach clue. By playing around with DNA and creating a bug to destroy the carriers of this new germ, they contain the catastrophe. Blu-ray Release date: September 27th, 2011

Salo BD - Set in the Nazi-controlled, northern Italian state of Salo in 1944, four dignitaries round up sixteen perfect specimens of youth and take them together with guards, servants and studs to a palace near Marzabotto. In addition, there are four middle-aged women: three of whom recount arousing stories whilst the fourth accompanies on the piano. The story is largely taken up with their recounting the stories of Dante and De Sade: the Circle of Manias, the Circle of Shit and the Circle of Blood. Following this, the youths are executed whilst each libertine takes his turn as voyeur. Blu-ray Release Date: October 4th, 2011

Atrocious - Distilled from thirty-seven hours of video footage shot over a period of five days (March 30, 2010 to April 3, 2010) by siblings Cristian (Cristian Valencia) and July (Clara Moraleda) Quintinilla while spending the Easter holidays with their father Santiago (Xavi Doz), mother Debora (Chus Pereiro), and younger brother Jose (Sergi Martin) at their long derelict country house in Sitges (recently fixed up by family friend Carlos [Jose Masegosa]). It is the perfect opportunity for the "urban legend" enthusiast siblings to explore the local "Girl on the Road" legend (which is not the same as our "Girl on the Bridge" urban legend). DVD Release Date: September 19th, 2011

Ben-Hur BD - The accolades could fill this page - Ben-Hur won a record 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Director (Wyler), Actor (Charlton Heston as Judah Ben-Hur), Supporting Actor (Hugh Griffith as Sheik Ilderim), Cinematography, Music Score, Costume Design, Film Editing, and Special Effects (which are still still surprisingly effective) - recently been ranked as one of the one hundred greatest films of all time - the final climactic scene has become a part of film lore - It featured more crew and extras than any other film before it. It took At $15 million and shot on a grand scale, it was a tremendous make-or-break risk for MGM Studios. Blu-ray Release Date: September 27th, 2011

Torso BD - When two comely coeds at the University of Perugia's summer art program are brutally murdered, all of her classmates and a couple associated unsavory types fall under suspicion. When Daniela (Tina Aumont, THE NUDE PRINCESS) suspects her childhood-friend-turned-stalker (Roberto Bisaccio, DEADLY SWEET), she decides to get away to her family's conveniently isolated home in the countryside with her friends (lesbian lovers played by Carla Brait and Angela Covello and "final girl" Julie played by Suzy Kendall of THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE) only to be followed by a couple red herrings as well as the killer. John Richardson (BLACK SUNDAY) and Luc Merenda (Tinto Brass' ACTION) also star. Blu-ray Release Date: September 27th, 2011

Carlos BD - For two decades he was the most wanted man on the planet. Now, experience the remarkable rise and fall of revolutionary terrorist-for-hire "Carlos the Jackal" in the acclaimed, action-packed epic critics are calling "one of the best pictures of the year" (David Lewis, San Francisco Chronicle). This definitive collector's edition features the full-length, three-part experience in stunning high-definition picture and earth-shattering 5.1 audio, a collection of exclusive extras, and a bonus disc containing the alternate theatrical cut from director Olivier Assayas. Criterion Blu-ray September 27th, 2011

The Magnificent Ambersons - Adapted from Booth Tarkington's barely remembered Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about social change in turn-of-the-century Indianapolis, The Magnificent Ambersons was in production when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Less than two months later, patriotic Welles took off on a war-related mission to Latin America that would result in his unfinished documentary It's All True. Ambersons' original 131-minute cut was entrusted to editor Robert Wise. DVD Release Date: September 13th, 2011

The Phantom Carriage BD - The last person to die on New Year’s Eve before the clock strikes twelve is doomed to take the reins of Death’s chariot and work tirelessly collecting fresh souls for the next year. So says the legend that drives The Phantom Carriage (Körkarlen), directed by the father of Swedish cinema, Victor Sjöström. The story, based on a novel by Nobel Prize winner Selma Lagerlöf, concerns an alcoholic, abusive ne’er-do-well (Sjöström himself) who is shown the error of his ways, and the pure-of-heart Salvation Army sister who believes in his redemption. This extraordinarily rich and innovative silent classic (which inspired Ingmar Bergman to make movies) is a Dickensian ghost story and a deeply moving morality tale, as well as a showcase for groundbreaking special effects. Blu-ray Release date: September 27th, 2011

Yellow Sky BD - Wellman (The Ox-Bow Incident) helms this gem involving of a band of outlaws, led by strong quiet James 'Stretch' Dawson (Gregory Peck), who find themselves knocking at death's door after becoming lost in the treacherous western Badlands. Their only salvation is a lonesome town called Yellow Sky, where the inhabitants consist of a doddering old prospector (James Barton) and his mysterious, alluring daughter (Anne Baxter). But their deliverance from danger is short-lived when the gang discovers a fateful secret hidden within the dusty, rotting walls of this ghost town... GOLD! A perfectly cast genre pearl that seems to have been all but forgotten. Region FREE Blu-ray Release Date: August 26th, 2011

Harakiri BD - With its intricate structure and pressure-cooker atmosphere, Kobayashi's first jidai-geki period drama is a full-scale demolition job of samurai ideals and feudal hypocrisy, filmed with artistry and surgical precision, and scored by celebrated composer Toru Takemitsu. Adapted from the same source novel in 2011 by notorious auteur Takashi Miike, the original winner of the 1963 Special Jury Prize at Cannes still stands as a startling moment in Japanese cinema. Blu-ray Release Date: October 4th, 2011

The Ox-Bow Incident BD - In the movies, you can pretty much count on Henry Fonda always to do the right thing. This is the man, after all, who played Abraham Lincoln, Wyatt Earp, Admiral Nimitz, General MacArthur, and Clarence Darrow. Sure, he also played the menacing Frank in Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in the West, but every actor needs to stretch once in a while. Some of Fonda’s characters, like those above, were unqualified heroes. Others, like his Tom Joad in The Grapes of Wrath and Gil Carter in The Ox-Bow Incident are more morally conflicted, yet still emerge from their particular predicaments without having condemned their souls to Hell.
