ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Everything has value this week - some great releases. I was very keen on Arrow's Three Films by Jia Zhangke 3 Blu-ray set with A Touch of Sin, 24 City and Mountains May Depart with extensive supplements. Sergei Parajanov’s masterpiece The Colour of Pomegranates is restored and has made it to Blu-ray from Second Sight Films in the UK. Criterion's double-disc Blu-ray of Tony Richardson's Tom Jones offers two cuts of the film and hours of extras. Indicator bring us three 70's and one early 80's, lesser seen, gems on Blu-ray this month. Don Siegel's Charley Varrick is an engaging crime thriller with Walter Matthau, Paul Schrader's debut is Blue Collar is a profane and profound drama about life on the factory floor of a Detroit car manufacturing plant that stars Richard Pryor, Harvey Keitel and Yaphet Kotto. Tony Richardson's The Border stars Jack Nicholson as an disinterested and demoralized U.S. border patrolman while The Fortune has him, Warren Beatty and Stockard Channing in a big-budget screwball comedy directed by Mike Nichols. Henri-Georges Clouzot's The Mystery of Picasso comes to Blu-ray from Arrow. He captures an artistic creativity with Picasso creating 20 works of art for the film. Hounds of Love is a harrowing psychological thriller based on real-life events from 80s Perth, Australia. Arrow gives this disturbing film a great Blu-ray transfer with supplements.

'Sleep well, and dream of large women' - The Princess Bride

Have a super week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

A Touch of Sin (part of Three Films by Jia Zhangke) BD - An angry miner, enraged by widespread corruption in his village, decides to take justice into his own hands. A rootless migrant discovers the infinite possibilities of owning a firearm. A young receptionist, who dates a married man and works at a local sauna, is pushed beyond her limits by an abusive client. And a young factory worker goes from one discouraging job to the next, only to face increasingly degrading circumstances. Arrow Blu-ray Release date: January 29th, 2018

24 City (part of Three Films by Jia Zhangke) BD - A masterful film from Jia Zhang-ke, the renowned director of Still Life and The World, 24 City chronicles the dramatic closing of a once-prosperous state-owned aeronautics factory in Chengdu, a city in Southwest China, and its conversion into a sprawling luxury apartment complex. Bursting with poetry, pop songs and striking visual detail, the film weaves together unforgettable stories from three generations of workers – some real, some played by actors (including Joan Chen) – into a vivid portrait of the human struggle behind China’s economic miracle. Blu-ray Release date: January 29th, 2018

Mountains May Depart (part of Three Films by Jia Zhangke) BD - On the cusp of the capitalist explosion in China, Shen Tao has two suitors-Zhang, an aspiring entrepreneur, and his best friend Liangzi, who works in a coal mine. Shen Tao decides to marry Zhang -- a man with a future. Blu-ray Release date: January 29th, 2018

The Fortune BD - This starts promisingly as a sardonic comedy about an absurd ménage-à-trois, the mechanics of sex in the '20s, and the men's bewilderment about matters female. Beatty and Nicholson, as the sleazy lounge lizard and halfwit accomplice who conspire to run away with an heiress, send up their own images as though indulging a private joke, but still manage a couple of delirious moments. Their flight west (incognito, but with Nicholson constantly drawing attention to them) throws away its gags shamelessly, but once in California lethargy settles in. Indicator Blu-ray Release date: January 22nd, 2018

Blue Collar BD - When Detroit autoworkers Zeke Brown (Richard Pryor), Jerry Bartowski (Harvey Keitel) and Smokey James (Yaphet Kotto) decide to rob their own union, they are initially disappointed by the relatively small haul. However, upon closer inspection, the three amateur thieves discover that they have made off with something potentially much more valuable than money: the union's ledger, filled with bogus figures and links to organized crime. Should they blackmail the union or go to the authorities. Indicator Blu-ray Release date: January 22nd, 2018

Charley Varrick BD - Charley Varrick (Walter Matthau) is a former stunt-pilot who makes his living robbing small banks in the American Southwest. His latest heist sees him unwittingly steal from the local mafia, setting a psychotic hit-man on his trail and unleashing a maelstrom of violence and destruction. Indicator Blu-ray Release date: January 22nd, 2018

The Border BD - Charlie Smith (Jack Nicholson) barely scrapes by on his low salary, but his hectoring wife, Marcy (Valerie Perrine), is anxious to move up in the world, so he takes a new position as a border patrol agent alongside the hair-trigger Cat (Harvey Keitel). Soon, Charlie is a reluctant party to Cat's smuggling and other petty criminal actions, but when the corrupt agent sets his avaricious sights on a poor illegal immigrant (Elpidia Carrillo) and her newborn baby, Charlie's moral code returns. Blu-ray Release date: January 22nd, 2018

The Mystery of Picasso BD - Director Henri-Georges Clouzot peers into the imagination of Pablo Picasso's studio and emerges with a quiet documentary that captures the revolutionary painter's creative process. Through a combination of stop-motion and time-lapse photography, Picasso's Cubist work comes to life on screen. Paint strokes and splashes of color appear as if by magic, as empty canvases become platforms for a series of daring and original drawings and paintings that exist only within the confines of this film. Blu-ray Release date: January 22nd, 2018

Tom Jones BD - In the early 1960s, at the height of the British New Wave, a movement whose gritty realism they had helped establish, director Tony Richardson and playwright John Osborne set out for more fanciful narrative territory. Tom Jones brings a theatrical flair to Henry Fielding s canonical eighteenth-century novel, boisterously chronicling the misadventures of the foundling of the title (Albert Finney, in a career-defining turn), whose easy charm seems to lead him astray at every turn from his beloved, the wellborn Sophie Western (Susannah York). This spirited picaresque, evocatively shot in England s rambling countryside and featuring an extraordinary ensemble cast, went on to become a worldwide sensation, winning the Oscar for best picture on the way to securing its status as a classic of irreverent wit and playful cinematic expression. Blu-ray Release date: February 27th, 2018

Hounds of Love BD - In 1987, murderous couple John and Evelyn roam the streets of Perth, Australia, searching for their latest victim. Fate leads them to Vicki Maloney, a teen who snuck out of her house at night to go to a party. Now held captive in a room, Vicki must use her wits to try and drive a wedge between the crazed duo before they can finish her off. Blu-ray Release date: January 29th, 2018

The Colour of Pomegranates BD - Sergei Parajanov’s celebrated masterpiece paints an astonishing portrait of the 18th century Armenian poet Sayat Nova, the ‘King of Songs’. Parajanov’s aim was not a conventional biography but a cinematic expression of his work, resulting in an extraordinary visual poem. Key moments in his subject’s life are illustrated through a series of exquisitely orchestrated tableaux filled with rich colour and stunning iconography, each scene a celluloid painting alive with stylised movement.
