BIG THANKS!: DVDBeaver would not exist without the support of many patrons - those who generously donate, and especially those who use our Amazon(s), Barnes & Noble, TCM, Warner Archive and YesAsia links. That's it. When you go to Amazon - PLEASE use one of our links to get there (they are on every page - top and bottom - and we have 5000 webpages). It costs you absolutely nothing and we get a small commission on items you purchase. This helps pay our bills - in fact it's the only thing that pays our bills.
STRATEGIES: The best way to take full advantage of Amazon is to use...
PRE-ORDERs - lock in at the discount price by ORDERING - if perchance you decide against the purchase you have until the release date to cancel - at no charge AND if you will purchase more than 35 DVDs (or anything) in a 365 day period (and live in the Continental US) it makes excellent financial sense to subscribe to Amazon Prime
NOTE:_

If there are DVD or Blu-ray titles you'd like us to cover - please feel free to recommend!

ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): The TOP three releases this week are obvious - and overwhelming. Criterion have transferred Jan Troell's epic The Emigrants / The New Land onto 2 dual-layered Blu-rays looking gorgeous and adding further value with important supplements. Dario Argento fans are spoiled by Arrow's Deep Red (4K) Blu-ray package - already OOP, and for justifiable reason - it's stacked with the best a/v seen yet. Criterion's new 4K restoration transfer of Chaplin's The Kid towers over the UK Blu-ray from late last year. A truly magnificent package worthy of the film and iconic filmmaker. Michael Curtiz' silent The Undesirable is a recently discovered source and the restored Blu-ray looks unbelievable for a film over 100 years old. Synapse bring Leni Riefenstahl's Triumph of the Will to 1080P and the film's historical significance remains daunting. Signal One in the UK advance all previous Blu-rays of the Charles Bronson revenger Mr. Majestyk directed by Richard Fleischer making it the definitive for the film. Hollow Triumph is on our Essential Noir Listing but we hope a superior Blu-ray is forthcoming. DVD coverage returns next week! Quote to mull over: “There's the good girl leading a charmed life who secretly covets to be the rare and elusive femme fatale and the femme fatale who yearns to be good and then there is their nemesis - men who dream and desire both.” - Donna Lynn Hope

Have a prosperous week! - Gary

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Deep Red (4K) BD - From Dario Argento, maestro of the macabre and the man behind some the greatest excursions in Italian horror (Suspiria, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage), comes Deep Red arguably the ultimate giallo movie. One night, musician Marcus Daly (David Hemmings, Blow Up), looking up from the street below, witnesses the brutal axe murder of a woman in her apartment. Racing to the scene, Marcus just manages to miss the perpetrator... or does he? As he takes on the role of amateur sleuth, Marcus finds himself ensnared in a bizarre web of murder and mystery where nothing is what it seems... Aided by a throbbing score from regular Argento-collaborators Goblin, Deep Red (aka Profondo Rosso and The Hatchet Murders) is a hallucinatory fever dream of a giallo punctuated by some of the most astonishing set-pieces the sub-genre has to offer. Arrow Blu-ray Release Date: January 24th, 2016 (already sold-out)

The Kid BD - Charlie Chaplin was already an international star when he decided to break out of the short-film format and make his first full-length feature. The Kid doesn’t merely show Chaplin at a turning point, when he proved that he was a serious film director—it remains an expressive masterwork of silent cinema. In it, he stars as his lovable Tramp character, this time raising an orphan (a remarkable young Jackie Coogan) he has rescued from the streets. Chaplin and Coogan make a miraculous pair in this nimble marriage of sentiment and slapstick, a film that is, as its opening title card states, “a picture with a smile—and perhaps, a tear.” The Criterion Blu-ray Release Date: February 16th, 2016

The Undesirable BD - The Undesirable, a silent film treasure thought to be lost forever, was recently discovered in the basement of the Hungarian House cultural center in New York and returned to Hungary for restoration. An eight-month restoration and digitization process was completed by the Hungarian Filmlab, with support from the Hungarian National Digital Archive and Film Institute and the Hungarian National Film Fun, and funded by the Hungarian National Film Foundation. Betty (Lili Berky, Duel For Nothing), a young woman living in the country, is told by her dying father that he is really her uncle and raised her as his own when her mother was sent to prison for killing her husband. Alone and not knowing her mother’s fate, Betty travels to the city in search of work. There she finds employment as a maid in the house of a wealthy couple and their dashing son, Nick, with whom she falls in love. Blu-ray Release date: January 19th, 2016

The Emigrants / The New Land BD - This monumental mid-nineteenth-century epic from Jan Troell charts, over the course of two films, a Swedish farming family’s voyage to America and their efforts to put down roots in this beautiful but forbidding new world. Movie legends Max Von Sydow and Liv Ullmann give remarkably authentic performances as Karl Oskar and Kristina, a couple who meet with one physical and emotional trial after another on their arduous journey. The precise, minute detail with which Troell depicts the couple’s story—which is also that of countless other people who sought better lives across the Atlantic—is a wonder to behold. Engrossing at every step of the way, the duo of The Emigrants and The New Land makes for perhaps the greatest screen drama about the settling of America. Blu-ray Release date: February 9th, 2016

Mr. Majestyk BD - Mr Majestyk (Bronson) is an ex-con and Vietnam vet whose efforts to run a normal life as a farmer are thwarted by narrow-minded locals and corrupts cops. When a Mafia hitman destroys Majestyk's crop, the farmer snaps. Taking his rifle in hand, he goes after the syndicate assassin, refusing to stop until his work is done. Signal One Blu-ray Release Date: January 4th, 2016

Triumph of the Will BD - Leni Riefenstahl's classic piece of historical filmmaking, filmed during the 1934 Nazi Party Rally in Nuremberg, Germany, is considered by many to be one of the most important films ever made. Realized by Paul Joseph Goebbels, Hitler's Reich Minister for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda, this film was created to influence all of Germany to support the power of the Nazi Party. Historically significant and, at times, a horrifyingly manipulative exercise in propaganda for the Nazi regime, TRIUMPH OF THE WILL continues to be controversial eighty years after its original release and has been banned in Germany for many decades. Until her death in 2003, Riefenstahl was under fire for her personal relationship with Adolph Hitler, spending her life haunted by the shadow of the Nazi Party. Blu-ray Release Date: December 15th, 2015

Hollow Triumph BD - "The Scar" (1948) Originally released under the title "Hollow Triumph," (and also known as The Man Who Murdered Himself), this dandy little film noir thriller from Eagle Lion features Paul Henreid with a chance to lose his leading man image for not one, but two sinister performances. When crooked gambler (Henreid) seeks to hide from a rival mobster, he hatches a plot to take the place of a psychiatrist that he's a dead-ringer for. But it's not long before the good doctor's secretary (Joan Bennett) is on to his scheme. Blu-ray Release Date: September 8th, 2015
