"The only true currency in this bankrupt world . . . is what you share with someone else when you’re uncool." Almost Famous

Have a special week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The Demons BD - Two orphaned sisters living quietly in a convent - free-spirited Kathleen (Anne Libert) and God fearing Margaret (Britt Nichols) are persecuted by the wicked Lady De Winter (Karin Field) who tells them they are daughters of a condemned witch burned at the stake. Believing the girls will seek vengeance, De Winter sends Kathleen to witch-hunter Judge Jeffries to be tortured and burned. Nucleus Films Blu-ray Release date: November 20th, 2017

Opera BD - Betty, the gorgeous understudy of an opera soprano, inadvertently finds herself centre stage when a random accident leaves the shows star incapacitated. She soon finds that her newfound stardom comes at a price when a masked assailant starts killing her friends and colleagues, forcing her to look on helplessly... Terror at the Opera is an astonishing film that questions our own involvement as passive viewers and features some of the greatest set-pieces Argento has ever devised. Scorpion Releasing Blu-ray Release Date: January 23rd, 2018

Nightmare BD - It is one of Freddie Francis' most imaginative films, making the most of a patchy Jimmy Sangster script. Knight (a faceless Hammer lead) is the suspect hero, and Linden the tormented young heroine haunted by the fear of hereditary insanity who, as the film begins, is plagued by a recurring nightmare in which her mother lures her into a mental asylum. Normally the Hammer psychological strain has a disconcertingly contemporary tone, but here the apparatus (who is trying to drive the girl out of her mind?) is truly Gothic: old country house, absent guardian, white phantom, etc.. Blu-ray Release date: November 7th, 2017

I Know Where I'm Going BD - In Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's stunningly photographed comedy, romance flourishes in an unlikely place—the bleak and moody Scottish Hebrides. Wendy Hiller stars as a headstrong young woman who travels to these remote isles to marry a rich lord. Stranded by stormy weather, she meets a handsome naval officer (Roger Livesey) who threatens to thwart her carefully laid-out life plans. Blu-ray Release Date: December 5th 2017

Glory - Tsanko Petrov, a railroad worker, finds millions of leva on the train tracks. He decides to turn the money over to the police, for which the state rewards him with a new wristwatch that soon stops working. Meanwhile, Julia Staikova, head of the PR department of the Ministry of Transport, loses Petrov's old watch, a family relic. Here starts his desperate struggle to recover both his old watch and his dignity. DVD Release Date: September 12th, 2017

Harmonium - In this slow-burn Japanese thriller Toshio invites an old acquaintance, Yasaka (just released from prison) to come and live with his family. Toshio lives above the small workshop that he owns with his wife, Akie, and their daughter, Hotaru. It is not clear why Toshio offers Yasaka a job; it doesn t seem to be out of friendship or goodwill. Akie and Hotaru are wary of the new lodger, but with his persistent charm and goodwill, Yasaka befriends Toshio s wife Akié and as Yasaka starts teaching their daughter Hotaru to play the harmonium, the family s fragile domestic bliss is forever altered. Director Kôji Fukada is a master of incremental development, drawing the audience into the unfolding outcome. DVD Release Date: November 14th, 2017

Love, Lies and Records - After landing her dream promotion to the top job of Superintendent Registrar, Kate is finding herself increasingly torn by her demanding work and the endless responsibilities of being a modern working mum. As if the daily dramas of births, marriages and deaths weren't enough to deal with, now a disgruntled colleague's threatening to expose a risqué secret from Kate's past that could jeopardise everything... DVD Release Date: December 26th, 2017

The Teacher - Every year, schoolteacher Mária Drazdechová (Zuzana Mauréry) welcomes a new class of pupils into her homeroom; however, she is less interested in them as individuals than in what their parents do and what they can do for her. As the local chairwoman of the Communist Party and the widow of a Russian officer, "Comrade Teacher" has parents doing her hair, waiting in line at the grocers in the morning (with the grocer saving choice meats and vegatables for her), and even smuggling gifts to her sister in Moscow on the airlines while the students drop by to clean her house and run errands. DVD Release Date: January 2nd, 2018

Alias Maria - The official submission of Colombia for Best Foreign Language Film for the 89th Academy Awards in 2017, ALIAS MARIA looks at armed conflict between guerillas living in the jungle and a country's paramilitary soldiers through the eyes of child soldier Maria (Karen Torres) who finds herself pregnant in a situation in which "the contraceptive is sacred" and only a few choice women are allowed to carry chilren of the commander while others are forced to have abortions. DVD Release Date: December 12th, 2017

Bad Lucky Goat - Aspiring musician Cornelius "Corn" Denton and his materialistic older sister Rita are constantly at each other's throats. When their mother sends them on an errand to pick up some benches for the local church, a skirmish between the two over Corn's harmonica playing distracts Rita from the road and they run over a goat. At first, they are less concerned with "bad juju" over killing an animal - which they pitch into the ocean tied to a rock - than fixing the truck's front fender and bent hood. DVD Release Date: December 12th, 2017

The Detectorists Series 3 - The award-winning ‘detectorists’ returns for a third series as we follow in the footsteps of Andy (Mackenzie Crook) and Lance (Toby Jones), two friends sharing a devotion to metal detecting. With their eyes on a particular plot of land, they dream of the one find which would bring history to life and change their lives in the process. DVD Release Date: December 18th, 2017
