Colombia/Argentina/France 2015
The official submission of Colombia for Best Foreign Language Film for the 89th Academy Awards in 2017, ALIAS MARIA looks at armed conflict between guerillas living in the jungle and a country's paramilitary soldiers through the eyes of child soldier Maria (Karen Torres) who finds herself pregnant in a situation in which "the contraceptive is sacred" and only a few choice women are allowed to carry chilren of the commander while others are forced to have abortions. As the paramilitary enclose on their camp, they are forced to break up the unit with Maria, fellow soldier Byron (Anderson Gomez), ten-year-old budding soldier Yuldor (Erik Ruiz), and Mauricio (Carlos Clavijo) - unknowing father of Maria's unborn child - assigned to make their way through the jungle to a collaborator in a distant village in order to deliver their superior's forbidden child to safety. As Maria looks after the infant and takes care of the badly-wounded Yuldor, she decides she no longer wants to get rid of her own child, which makes preventing Mauricio's discovery of her condition even more imperative. As they are forced to leave the infant with an older civilian couple who can barely take care of themselves in order to evade the military, Maria finds herself having to chose between her beliefs and her own instincts about motherhood. |

Comments |
Strand Releasing's high-bitrate progressive, anamorphic encode suits this stark-looking and gritty film while the Dolby Digital 5.1 track utilizes the rear channels for both loud gunfire and jungle atmosphere. The optional English subtitles only had one noticeable spelling error. There are no extras apart from the film's trailer and trailers for four other Strand titles. |
