(aka "When the Well Runs Dry" )
directed by Samir Oliveros
Colombia 2017
Aspiring musician Cornelius "Corn" Denton and his materialistic older sister Rita are constantly at each other's throats. When their mother sends them on an errand to pick up some benches for the local church, a skirmish between the two over Corn's harmonica playing distracts Rita from the road and they run over a goat. At first, they are less concerned with "bad juju" over killing an animal - which they pitch into the ocean tied to a rock - than fixing the truck's front fender and bent hood. When even the "family discount" is more than they can manage, Corn and Rita decide to scrape up the amount by retrieving the goat. As they venture across town selling off the meat and the skin and pawning bartered goods, the siblings clash and often sabotage themselves but soon find themselves in danger from their policeman uncle who has been set after them by their mother and from the local gangster who is looking for his missing goat. While not exactly a coming-of-age tale since the two young characters attribute their misadventures not to their reluctance to take responsibility but to simple bad luck, BAD LUCKY GOAT remains an enchanting comedy because the sibling bonding is moving and one feels they these characters have more time to grow up. |

Comments |
Film Movement's progressive, anamorphic transfer looks flattish but acceptable in brightly lit scenes but some night exteriors late in the film are swarming with macroblocking in the darkest parts of the frame which may be a fault with the encode or even the compression of the digital master. The Dolby Digital 5.1 track utilizes the surrounds conservatively for atmosphere and some scoring but the 2.0 track is serviceable. Optional English subtitles translate and transcribe all of the dialogue. Extras are confined to an unrelated short film and trailers for other releases. |
