USA 1990

Set off for some intergalactic fun with America’s favorite family of the future in their full-length animated movie! Meet George Jetson, his wife Jane, daughter Judy, son Elroy, Rosie the Robot and Astro the family dog as they move to an asteroid full of space-age wonders. But when they discover that George’s new company is disturbing the home of friendly underground creatures named Grungees, they’ll have to work together to spread peace on their new space place. Directed by the original creators of The Jetsons, Joseph Barbera and William Hanna, and featuring the voice talents of the original George and Jane Jetson, George O’Hanlon and Penny Singleton, as well as legendary voice artist Mel Blanc (Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck), and music from pop singer Tiffany, it’s destined to be a universal hit with the whole family!

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (February 2021): Kino have released the 1990 "Jetsons: The Movie" on a new single-layer Blu-ray. The 1.85:1 HD image is sorely lacking in many ways, showing a picture that is often extremely dark, with excessive thick grain obscuring any potential bump in clarity or detail over any previous SD release (VHS, DVD or otherwise). The film does sport a rather high bitrate, though the jarring switching between the new fandangled (new as of 1990) CGI establishing shots and the older style of cell animation is even more pronounced in 1080p. The contrast doesn't appear to be very effective either, this is especially notable in darker scenes. This could be just due to the animation style, though when looking at Gary's review of the complete series on Blu-ray (HERE), one notices that this release doesn't appear as vibrant. Look, the film still works and is worth checking out, especially for fans of the animated series, but this presentation leaves one scratching their head.

Sadly, the audio department on this new
Blu-ray from Kino is no better than the visuals. Kino gives the choice of either 5.1 surround or 2.0 stereo 16-bit DTS-HD Master audio. As for the surround choice, I would skip it. Perhaps it is my setup but I found the mix to be quite underwhelming, with the 2.0 stereo providing a more balanced presentation (with dialogue centered and not overwhelmed by the other channels, as is the case in the 5.1). The stereo track does suffice, though the film's audio lacks any sort of dynamism, sounding flat. There are optional English subtitles on this Region 'A' Blu-ray from Kino.

Kino Lorber have included a new audio commentary by author/film historian, Lee Gambin. Gambin provides his expertise on all things Jetsons, covering everything in the beloved cartoon's universe. Topics range from the film's unique blend of animation and CGI to the musical stylings of Tiffany. Gambin's enthusiasm for discussing the film is infectious, leading to yet another passionate and comprehensive commentary track from the author. Also included on this Kino
Blu-ray is an audio interview with voice actor, Jeff Bergman (George Jetson / Mr. Spacely / Board Member). This interview is conducted by Lee Gambin, and will be of interest to Jetsons aficionados. Trailers for the film and two others ("Thunderbirds Are Go", "Thunderbird 6") round out the Blu-ray.

"Jetsons: The Movie" was an odd mix of old and new elements when it was released in 1990. As of this writing, the film is 31-years old and is a sort of relic itself. Kino's
Blu-ray features a rather poor transfer of what I assume were the best available elements available. Lee Gambin's commentary is a detailed and thoughtful bonus feature, and the almost hour-long interview with Jeff Bergman is a welcome addition. Recommended to fans despite my reservations on the Blu-ray transfer.
