Directed by Roger Corman
USA 1957

While investigating the disappearance of researchers who had been looking into atomic activity in the Pacific, a group of scientists become marooned on an island. They quickly fall prey to giant, mutant crustaceans that are able to absorb the minds of their prey. Starring Russell Johnson (Gilligan’s Island), Richard Garland (Mutiny In Outer Space) and Mel Welles (The Little Shop Of Horrors).

***

A group of scientists travel to a remote island to study the effects of nuclear weapons tests, only to get stranded when their airplane mysteriously explodes. The team soon discovers that the tests have given rise to crabs mutated into intelligent, impervious, telepathic giants intent on increasing their numbers by breeding, then travelling to populated areas to feed, and which do not intend to be stopped by their discoverers.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Shout! Factory Blu-ray (October 2020): Shout! Factory have transferred Roger Corman's Attack Of The Crab Monsters to Blu-ray, advertised as a "NEW 2K Scan Of A Fine-Grain Print". It is exclusive and limited to 1,000 units. This hour-long film is on a single-layered disc and has a max'ed out bitrate. It looks pretty impressive for the most part with only a very few divergences in quality (see sample below.) Contrast is very pleasing and the film grain textures are consistent. I thought the 1080P HD presentation was better than I anticipated.

NOTE: We have added 56 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Shout! Factory use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (24-bit) in the original English language. There are few demonstrative effects but a supportive score by AIP regular Ronald Stein who has done more than his share of this genre (Dinosaurus, Journey to the Seventh Planet, Queen of Blood, She Creature, It Conquered the World, Not of This Earth, Dementai 13, Spider Baby etc.) adding some tension to the film experience. Shout! Factory offer optional English (SDH) yellow subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Shout! Factory Blu-ray offers a new commentary by Film Historians Tom Weaver, John Brunas and Mike Brunas, that I think was on the 2010 DVD. It's concise with lots of detail minutia on the production, script-to-screen alterations, Corman etc. A Salute to Roger Corman runs 26-minutes and features interviews tidbits with Roger Corman, Peter Fonda, Peter Bogdanovich, Joe Dante and other extolling the producer. Lastly is a theatrical trailer.

Roger Corman's Attack Of The Crab Monsters is more of the producer/director's pragmatic 50's 'B' creature-features where the 'monster' visuals are always underwhelming. It only seems to be missing Beverly Garland, instead having her husband Richard. Pamela Duncan and Russell Johnson help establish the 'researcher' atmosphere hinting at atomic-age tests in the area. I think most know what they are getting into with a title like Attack Of The Crab Monsters. From that standpoint it satisfies. Probably the Shout! Factory Blu-ray is mostly geared towards completists of our 50's-60's sci-fi Atomic Age Molemen From Planet Z listing page. Nostalgia factor is very high. I'm keeping it.
