Directed by Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr.
USA 1960

Alive with thrills that started a million years ago! From legendary producer Jack H. Harris and director Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr., the team behind sci-fi classics The Blob and 4D Man, comes this cult fantasy-adventure starring Ward Ramsey, Paul Lukather and Kristina Hanson. Building a new harbor off the coast of a Caribbean island, an American engineer (Ramsey) sets off a blast on the ocean floor that uncovers the frozen bodies of a Brontosaurus, a Tyrannosaurus Rex and a Neanderthal Man. The dinosaurs are hauled ashore by the construction crew, who are unaware that the giants are still alive. Struck by lightning during a fierce tropical storm, the monsters awaken and prowl the island jungles! Also restored to life is the caveman (Gregg Martell), an amiable brute who joins the island boy Julio (Alan Roberts) in a series of wacky misadventures. A merry grab-bag of sci-fi, action and comedy, Dinosaurus! features stop-motion dinosaur animation by the legendary Projects Unlimited effects team (The Time Machine, The Outer Limits). Beautifully shot in Scope by the great Stanley Cortez (Since You Went Away, The Night of the Hunter).

***

Slipping along an ill-defined track between seriousness, subtle farce, and all-out slapstick, this sci-fi comedy-drama by director Irvin S. Yeaworth, Jr. (The Blob, 1958) would be entertaining enough for the moppet set and highly amusing in many spots for adults as well. What sets the ball rolling is that a tyrannosaurus rex, a brontosaurus, and a neolithic man are brought back to life from their prehistoric world. As desperate leaders of the modern world try their best to kill off the carnivorous tyrannosaurus rex, the caveman is receiving high-voltage culture shock from the "civilization" he encounters all around him. One sequence has him coming face to face with a woman in full make-up -- and both go screaming off in terror. Gregg Martell is the confused Neanderthal, Julio (Alan Roberts) is a boy who tries to make friends with the brontosaurus, and Mike Hacker (Fred Engelberg) is the requisite villain.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (August 2019): Kino have transferred Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr.'s Dinosaurus! to Blu-ray. It comes from a strong source as the image quality is very strong with vibrant colors and a fine sheen of grain texture. This is housed on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate and is described as "Brand new 4K restoration from the original camera negative!". The Cinemascope widescreen image quality is impressive.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (16-bit) in the original English language. Effects have depth and there is a supportive score by AIP regular Ronald Stein who has done more than his share of this genre (Journey to the Seventh Planet, Queen of Blood, She Creature, It Conquered the World, Not of This Earth, Dementai 13, Spider Baby etc.). Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray has extras which include an audio commentary by Kris Yeaworth (director Irwin's son) who tells us some details that he was privy to including how his mother, Jean Yeaworth, wrote the humor into Dinosaurus!. Kris is frequently impressed by the quality of the source (we presume the Blu-ray) that he is watching. He gives minutia on the cast and crew - relaxed and enjoyable. There is also Dinosaurus!: A Monstrous Story which appears to be from a German production and has about 1/2 hour's worth of interviews with Producer Jack H. Harris, Co-star Paul Lukather and Film Historians Donald F. Glut and Bill Warren from years ago. There is a trailer and the package has reversible art (see below.)

Nostalgia may be the most prominent attribute for watching Dinosaurus! The humor angle is downplayed and it is a thrilling conclusion. I loved this 50's-60's genre of, essentially, innocent creature-features, and I'm pleased to own it on Blu-ray. Perhaps to revisit one rainy Sunday afternoon.
