Directed by Frederick De Cordova
USA 1950

Starring Yvonne De Carlo (Criss Cross), Philip Friend (Thunder on the Hill) and Elsa Lanchester (Witness for the Prosecution), Buccaneer’s Girl is an exciting adventure beautifully shot in glorious Technicolor by legendary cinematographer Russell Metty (Spartacus, Touch of Evil). When brave Boston stowaway Deborah McCoy (De Carlo) is captured by the notorious pirate Frederic Baptiste (Friend), she stealthily escapes to New Orleans and uses her talents to get hired as an entertainer. However, she soon discovers that Baptiste has a secret identity—aristocratic playboy Captain Robert Kingston—and must decide whether to assist him in his daring schemes or turn him over to the law. Frederick De Cordova (Bedtime for Bonzo) directed this rip-roaring swashbuckler filled with romance and intrigue, co-starring Robert Douglas (Tarzan, the Ape Man), Andrea King (The Beast with Five Fingers), Norman Lloyd (Saboteur), Jay C. Flippen (The Lemon Drop Kid), Douglass Dumbrille (The Lives of a Bengal Lancer) and Peggie Castle (99 River Street).

Buccaneer's Girl is a 1950 American romantic adventure film directed by Frederick De Cordova and starring Yvonne De Carlo, Philip Friend and Robert Douglas. A New Orleans singer becomes involved with a Pirate Lord.

***

Robin Hood-like pirate Baste takes only the ships of rich but wicked trader Narbonne. Fun loving Debbie, a passenger from his latest prize, stows away on the pirate ship and falls for the pirate; later, having become a New Orleans entertainer, she meets his alter ego, who's engaged to the governor's daughter. Sea battles and land rescues follow in lighthearted style.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (July 2020): Kino have transferred Frederick De Cordova's Buccaneer's Girl to Blu-ray. It is from the same source but the 1080P transfer showcases the differences between SD and Blu-ray. The colors bleed on the DVD and while they are most always tight in the HD presentation - it is significantly improved with richer primary and pastels for the Technicolor.  The BD is brighter and exports depth with crisper detail but the most notable attribute is the superior color palette.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (16-bit) in the original English language. It is another advancement in the film's audio and score by Walter Scharf (Abandoned, Three Violent People, Casbah, The Glass Key, Hans Christian Andersen, The Geisha Boy, Rock-a-Bye Baby) sounding a bit deeper with more consistent dialogue. There are four musical numbers sung, danced by Yvonne De Carlo lifting Buccaneer's Girl into a 'musical' genre representation. Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray has a new audio commentary by Author/Film Historian Lee Gambin. He's very good centering his discussion in two areas - the subtext of class structure and resentment, gender identity and the star Yvonne De Carlo. I am also a big fan of her and he details some interesting information from her biography and talking about her variety of roles, including television's Lily Munster as her most widely remembered character. The bizarre cult television series The Munsters ran from 1964-1966. Gambin covers many of the other stars as well as director De Cordova and costume designer Yvonne Wood. I enjoyed the commentary - more as it rolled on. There is also an SD trailer for the film.

Buccaneer's Girl is carried by Yvonne De Carlo. It's a fun-adventure-musical film with a few dark edges. De Carlo is stunning, has some good comedic timing and does a great job. Nice to see Elsa Lanchester as well. The film is actually above average as a light swashbuckler but it is not much more than that. I prefer to see her in serious 'meatier' roles but with the Gambin commentary and vastly improved a/v I did enjoy the Kino Blu-ray. Fans of vintage era and the hypnotic star should consider.
