(aka 'Maverick')

directed by Rudolph Maté
USA 1957

Charlton Heston, Anne Baxter and Gilbert Roland portray the title characters in this unusual western set during Reconstruction. A battalion of Confederate soldiers live in Texas under Union rule. Their forces maimed by insulting northerners and abusive carpetbaggers, these men-in-gray still follow the guidance of a fiercely proud captain. Aside from military obligations, this officer plans to wed a strong-willed lady named Lorna. She, however, withholds a damaging secret about where she used to work during the Civil War.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Paramount Blu-ray (June 2019): Paramount in Germany have transferred Rudolph Mate's 1957's Three Violent People to Blu-ray as part of a nine-film 3 BD boxset that includes True Grit (1969), Hondo, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, El Dorado, Posse, The Sons of Katie Elder, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and Hud. They start with a Universal logo.

The image is one of the weakest of the boxset - low bitrate (less than double that of the DVD) as it shares the BD disc with two other feature - and the image is flat, a bit waxy, soft with a slight shift in colors (skin tones). It does show slightly more information in the frame and may be a differently source than the SD. It is not a great image presentation - although it is 1080P.

Like Hud, on their Blu-ray, Paramount use a lossy Dolby 2.0 channel mono in original English with the option of a German DUB for those that require/prefer it. There are only typical aggressive genre effects (gunshots, horses etc.) but no demonstrative depth. The score from Walter Scharf (Casbah, The Glass Key, Hans Christian Andersen, The Geisha Boy, Rock-a-Bye Baby) sounds rousing and suite the film. Paramount offer optional, white, German subtitles (see sample below) on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Paramount Blu-ray Boxset has no supplements - just the nine films listed above.

The poor Blu-ray image and lossy audio and video are disappointments - as are the lack of extras. Hopefully this will be encouragement to be done correctly in the US or UK soon.

ON THE DVD: This is a pretty decent image from Paramount. Sharp, a little over contrasted at times.. great outdoors' scenes. Gaudy yellow subtitles and original audio. And that is all... not a smidgeon of an extra of liner note. I'm on a western kick and I liked this film. Heston, the latter day "Arnold", works well the machismo stuff. Anne Baxter is pretty sweet. A good reasonable purchase.  out of
