Directed by Reginald Le Borg (as Reginald LeBorg)
USA 1944
Paula the ape woman (Acquanetta) is alive and well, and running around a creepy old sanitarium run by the kindly Dr. Fletcher (J. Carrol Naish), also reverting to her true gorilla form every once in a while to kill somebody. *** Acquanetta stars as the alluring jungle woman who runs about in the wilds, sometimes in human form and on other occasions as an ape. When scientist Naish discovers her, he drugs her and carts the ape-lady back to his research center. While performing some tests, however, he administers an overdose and kills her. Naish is brought to trial for her death but is acquitted when the body appears as an ape's. The film is told in flashback as Naish gives his story to a jury. Footage from CAPTIVE WILD WOMAN, this story's predecessor, is incorporated, including some scenes with Carradine. A third film, THE JUNGLE CAPTIVE, followed. Excerpt from TV Guide located HERE |

NOTE:
The below
Blu-ray
captures were taken directly from the
Blu-ray
disc.
We have
previously viewed
"Universal
Horror Collection: Vol. 1"
HERE,
Vol. 2 HERE,
Vol. 3 HERE and
Volume 4 HERE. I'm interested in the upcoming
"Universal Horror
Collection: Volume 6" with The
Black Castle, Cult Of The Cobra, The Thing That Couldn't Die
and The Shadow Of The Cat.
On their
Blu-ray,
Shout! Factory use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (24-bit) in the
original English language. There are a few instances of hiss and an
occasionally light pop which seems odd considering the clean video
source. The score is by Paul Sawtell (Lost
City of the Jungle, 5
Steps to Danger,
A
Game of Death, Inferno, Silver
City, The
Fly, Denver
and Rio Grande, Voyage
to the Bottom of the Sea etc.)
sounding dramatic, supportive but generic. Shout! Factory offer optional English
(SDH)
subtitles on their Region 'A'
Blu-ray.
The Shout! Factory
Blu-ray
Reginald Le Borg's Jungle Woman is a fascinating artifact - especially after listening to the Mank commentary. It's a bit of a rip-off with so much of the footage of Captive Wild Woman reused. There is a lot of shadows, tension and mystery but is generally a weak effort in this, already non-premium, disjointed series of three films (Captive Wild Woman, Jungle Woman and The Jungle Captive.) The Shout! Factory Blu-ray has the excellent Mank commentary and other three films, but I continue to state that I am more interested in the upcoming "Universal Horror Collection: Volume 6" with The Black Castle, Cult Of The Cobra, The Thing That Couldn't Die and The Shadow Of The Cat. |
