(aka "I tre del Colorado" or "Canadian Wilderness" or "Rebels in Canada" or "Revolt in Canada" or "Three from Colorado" or "Hudson River Massacre")
Directed by Amando de Ossorio
Italy /
Spain 1965
Canada, Nineteenth century... The Hudson Bay Company, with James Sullivan (Santiago Rivero) at the helm and supported by the British Mounted Police, impose unacceptable conditions on native trappers. A group led by Leo Limoux (Franco Fantasia), rebel in retaliation. Victor DeFrois (George Martin), a trapper who, until the execution his brother by the British soldiers had remained neutral, kidnaps Ann Sullivan (Giulia Rubini), daughter of the ruthless owner of the Hudson Bay Company, to use as a bartering tool while the rebels seek to disrupt and gain control of the company's business. What Victor didn't count on was falling in love with his hostage, in this classic spaghetti western written and directed by Amando de Ossorio (Tombs of the Blind Dead). *** Although some of the story elements have a historic background the movie is pure fantasy and no effort was made to give it an authentic look; the trappers all wear Davy Crocket fur hats and the weapons on display are an odd mix of hand guns and other fire arms that only came into use much later. There are no gun duels, no dusty streets, no sweaty faces or brooding looks, instead there are several fistfights and two battle sequences, with the Mounties charging the rebels in full cavalry style, sabers drawn. The body count is surprisingly high for an early European western movie, but the movie lacks the mean and dirty atmosphere that would soon be associated with Italian and Spanish western movies. The atmosphere is closer to James Fenimore Cooper than to Sergio Leone and occasionally I even had the weird feeling that I was watching a Robin Hood movie, with Victor & the boys fighting the evil Sheriff of Nottingham. NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc. ADDITION: MVD Blu-ray (February 2020): What the devil is this?!?!? MVD have transferred the odd, multi-titled, Spanish / Italian co-production, pioneering-adventure, Hudson River Massacre to Blu-ray. It looks horrible - there are compression artifacts everywhere - digitization, waxy DNR-ish softness, edge-enhancement and probably a dozen more digital flaws that I can't even name. It could simply be an SD-bump... of a third or fourth generation source. It's in the 1.63:1 aspect ratio has frayed edges and occasional distorted (out-of-ratio) backgrounds and faces. It's on a single-layered disc with a high bitrate. NOTE: The title card appears to be in Spanish and has burned in French subtitles. On their Blu-ray, MVD offer the option of a linear PCM mono track (16-bit) in an English language DUB or a lossy Dolby Spanish DUB (at least most of it seems dubbed). The film's audio starts with an awful, loud, hiss. Carlo Savina is credited with the score - he is known for Lisa and the Devil, Fangs of the Living Dead, and conducting Nino Rota's score for Fellini's I Clowns, Juliet of the Spirits and Amarcord. Fangs of the Living Dead, sounding weak and flawed. There is a song during the credits; Los Arboles Blancos sung by Maria del Carmen de la Torre dubbing Giulia Rubini in French but identified by the subtitles as:
MVD offer optional English subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray. The MVD Blu-ray has only a damaged trailer as an extra. I'd say that this is probably the worst Blu-ray I've reviewed in years. Even though the film has a 3.9 rating on IMDb, I'd say that it was the best attribute of this MVD package along with the typical Euro-sleaze female bondage and torture. Overpriced even as a Walmart bin sale item. Pass. |
