Directed by Gus Van Sant
USA |
Argentina | Jordan 2002
From Gus Van Sant, the groundbreaking director of Good Will Hunting and My Own Private Idaho, comes a suspenseful and highly provocative story of two men pushed to the limit. A pair of best friends (Matt Damon and Casey Affleck), who've nicknamed each other "Gerry," set out on a desert hike. But what begins as a simple daytime adventure turns into an intense life-and-death journey that will test the boundaries of human endurance ... and ultimately, their bond. Written by Damon, Affleck, and Van Sant, this uncommonly compelling motion picture is a starkly realized triumph of visionary filmmaking. *** Friends Gerry (Casey Affleck) and Gerry (Matt Damon) hike into Death Valley, but they stray so far from the trail that they have no idea how to get back. Initially, they maintain morale by rehashing old stories and reciting inside jokes, but the gravity of their situation sinks in as a return to civilization becomes more unlikely. As the sheer scope, hypnotic pull and spirit-crushing mirages of the desert affect the men, their will to live and sense of identity is challenged and transformed. |

On their
Blu-ray,
Shout! Factory give the option of DTS-HD Master (24-bit) tracks in both
2.0 channel stereo and 5.1 surround. Both in the original English
language. There is some mild separation but the film is significantly impacted by
the score by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt (who wrote
pieces used in
Mia Madre,
The Banishment,
The Great Beauty,
Foxcatcher,
There Will Be Blood among other great films)
notably Für Alina and Spiegel im
Spiegel, both used in Tom Tykwer's
Heaven sound beautiful in the lossless. Shout! Factory offer optional English
subtitles on their Region 'A'
Blu-ray.
The Shout! Factory
Blu-ray's
only supplements, besides a trailer, is
Felix Andrew's 1/4 hour 2003 short “Salt Lake Van Sant” – a
behind the scenes look at how the salt lake scene in Gus Van Sant's 'Gerry'
was filmed. A commentary wouldn't suit the film experience - this is
cinema that has to be personally absorbed not lectured about.
I find that Gerry, with its wild
swings of critical judgment from 'masterpiece' to 'student film flop', is
a litmus test for understanding cinema and its power to speak to the
soul. Like another Van Sant masterpiece,
Paranoid Park, it is what is not spoon-fed to the
audience that is the most impacting. Along with Arvo Pärt's solitary,
idyllic music - the Harris Savides' cinematography (Elephant,
Zodiac etc.) in Jordan, Argentina, the Bonneville Salt Flats,
Utah, and Death Valley National Park, California - the impressive
landscapes are heightened by the 1080P presentation, advancing it to
more impacting levels. Gerry is brilliant cinema channeling
the visual splendor of Antonioni. It's a film I thrilled to own in the
higher resolution of Blu-ray.
Despite the limited extras we give it our highest recommendation!
