ADDITION: Second Run - Region FREE Blu-ray - July 2017: The Second Run is advertised as "presented from a new 4K restoration from original materials by the Karel Zeman Museum and the Czech National Film Archive". The restoration is amazing in 1080P. This is on a dual-layered disc with a high bitrate. Colors, and tints, become far more prominent and richer, damage and speckles disappear and there is more information in the frame. It is tighter and sharper and contrast is wonderfully layered. Grain is fine and adds a consistent texture to the visuals. In short - it looks magnificent in-motion.

Second Run use a linear PCM 2.0 channel track (24-bit) which beautifully supports the playful score of Zdenek Liska (The Shop on High Street, The White Dove, Fruit of Paradise, The Cremator). It sounds very clean (also restored) with some depth and there are optional English subtitles on the Region FREE Blu-ray.

Second Run add most of the extras of the Muzeum Karla Zemana 2012 DVD and make some significant additions. Film Adventurer Karel Zeman is a feature length documentary on the life, work and influence of Karel Zeman with contributions from Terry Gilliam, Tim Burton, Koji Yamamura and others made in 2015. It covers so much of the history and input from modern filmmakers notable kudos some from the likes of Tim Burton who has stated "Karel Zeman and Ray Harryhausen were the two big inspirations for me... what Zeman did was amazing" and Terry Gilliam who stated "He did what I'm still trying to do, which is to try and combine live action with animation. His Doré-esque backgrounds were wonderful. The Fabulous Baron Munchausen captured the real spirit of the character". It's a great supplement - almost essential as an extra for the film. There is also a rewarding exclusive appreciation by writer, editor and film historian Michael Brooke for over 36-minutes entitled Baron Munchausen: Facts and Fibs. He details much of the history of the character loosely based on a real baron, Hieronymus Karl Friedrich, Freiherr von Münchhausen (1720–1797) - by the fictional German nobleman created by the German writer Rudolf Erich Raspe. We recall the phrases associated including 'Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy' etc. It's a well-researched and excellent video piece. As stated, all the short featurettes are still here including Karel Zeman and the World, The Birth of a Film Legend, Why Zeman Made the Film, The Cast etc. There is also a trailer about the restoration and the package contains a booklet featuring a new essay on the film by journalist and critic Graham Williamson.

This is an incredible release - Second Run's best to date and because it is region FREE - any Blu-ray aficionado can own. This has our highest recommendation - a masterpiece film, in 4K restoration - looking outstanding and a bevy of great extras. What's not to love. Buy with joy!
