Screen legends Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray star in the heartwarming holiday classic Remember the Night (1940). Lee Leander (Stanwyck) is a petty shoplifter on trial for swiping an expensive bracelet from a local jewelry store. When her trial is postponed until after New Year's, sympathetic Assistant District Attorney John Sargent (MacMurray) bails her out of jail. Together, they find themselves falling in love when he invites her to his family's home for the holidays where she discovers the warmth and love she's never had but always wanted. Featuring a wonderful supporting cast (Beulah Bondi, Sterling Holloway and Elizabeth Patterson), stylish costumes by Edith Head, a charming script by Preston Sturges, and superb direction by Mitchell Leisen, Remember the Night (1940) is a timeless holiday favorite that can be enjoyed every season.

NOTE: Big thanks to Ben Gart for sending us the original TCM captures (2010 - prior to the restoration for the Library of Congress). I understand it is was an MoD (Made on Demand) transfer but looks decent to me. It is darker and there are instances where it shows less detail (darkness) and others where is shows more (obscured by brightness on the restoration.) There is notably more information in the frame as well! (more on the left, top and borrom edge - a bit less on the right edge) If we understand this correctly - the old has the same extras, same cover, same menus but the newer costs about $9 more - and you should view the screen caps yourself to see if it is worth it for you.

A fabulous film - at the holiday season... or not. Remember the Night was the first film pairing for Stanwyck and MacMurray, but they are probably best remembered together in the iconic Noir, Billy Wilder's, Double Indemnity and then a dozen years later they found each other in Douglas Sirk's There's Always Tomorrow.

This is supposedly the newer restored print (sent to the Library of Congress). We hope to compare to the older DVD soon!

The Universal-presented TCM DVD is single-layered but looks quite good. It is progressive, with solid contrast and consistent, visible, grain. It only suffers from some brightness hot-spots and noise but it didn't deter my viewing experience at all. Audio is unremarkable but clean and even - I'll wager, close to the way it was produced. There are no subtitles offered.

There are some supplements -if rather minor. They include  a short introduction by Robert Osborne, and a five minute piece with with Art Director Henry Bumstead and actress Constance Moore discussing director Mitchell Leisen. After that it is mostly static text screen - but not bad ones - articles, trivia, posters and stills.

This is a VERY easy recommendation. A great film to watch over the upcoming holidays and let's hope it reaches 1080P one day!
