(aka "La corrupción de Chris Miller" or "La Corruption de Chris Miller" or "Behind the Shutters" opr "Sisters of Corruption")
Directed by Juan Antonio Bardem
Spain 1973
Chris Miller (former Spanish child star, Marisol) lives with her stepmother Ruth
(Jean Seberg;
Breathless) in a large secluded mansion in the countryside. Both
women have been traumatized by the mysterious disappearance of Chris' father but
their isolation is soon interrupted by the arrival of a mysterious young
drifter, Barney (Barry Stokes;
Prey), who they take on as a handyman. All the
while, an unknown scythe wielding killer has been stalking the area, leaving an
ever growing body count, and it's not long before the women grow increasingly
suspicious of Barney... *** In addition, the film's preoccupation with a kind of doomy, unfulfilling heterosexuality, with lesbianism as the alternative, recalls the bogus breakthroughs made by some European film makers in the late 60's, when censorship boards everywhere began to crack. The film, however, is typical of those of the later period of Miss Seberg's life abroad. The settings and costumes mean to be chic; the melodrama is absurd, and Miss Seberg, her beauty unimpaired, gives an extremely sincere performance that is never particularly convincing. Once again, though, she gives dimension to a film of no great interest just because her presence is so unexpected. Excerpt from the NY Times located HERE |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.
Vinegar Syndrome transfer Juan Antonio Bardem's 1973
Giallo "The Corruption of Chris Miller" on a dual-layered
Blu-ray
disc with an accompanying DVD. The 2.37:1 HD image is given a nicely
maxed-out bitrate. Vinegar Syndrome have newly scanned & restored the
film in 4k from its 35mm original negative, and the results are pretty
sumptuous. The texture of the image has a very film-like grain, with
only the occasional tiny scratch, speckle or frame-specific cue blip. These instances of damage are
few and far between and should not deter anyone from watching the film.
"The Corruption of Chris Miller" features a faithful color
representation of lush green landscapes, with the occasional burst of
appropriately bloody red blood. There are scenes taking place in the
dark, with a healthy contrast showing just the right amount of blacks
lurking in the shadows, without a uniform crushing black. A splendid
1080P transfer for a truly outrageous
Giallo from the folks at Vinegar Syndrome. |
